THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CA ROLINA, FRIDAY, FIFTH DAY OF MARCH, 1937- Court from Page One) to be sent to the U. S. Veterans Facility in Alabama and to remain in common jail until transferred to hospital. R. L. Askea got careless and reckless with his or some other man’s automobile. He was taxed $25.00 and half again as much for costs. It seems Askea set a bad example which Leslie M. Turnage tried to imitate, for the next case was a gainst Leslie for handling an auto. carelessly and recklessly. And his j problem was worked with the same equation: $25.00 and costs. Somebody seems to have thought W. H. Crossland was trying to fol low in Askea’s and Turnoge’s wheel tracks. But Solicitor Finch failed to produce sufficient evidence to convince the court, ao the accused rode away on his own power. _ James Jeffries (not related to the famous prize fighter so far as we know), but better known as “Flute” played, it appeared to the court the wrong tune with his fingers and was sent up to Superior Court under a SSOO bond. According to the evidence James concealed him self as best he could in the City Market and when opportunity came stole money from the cash drawer. With others he was carried to the Wake county jail in Raleigh. Solomon said “Money answereth all things”. A modern wiseacre says the only answer he has ever been able to get from money is “Goodbye”. Any way Joe Holden had some displayed before his gaze, in fact it was offered to Joe sort of conditionally ans temporar ily. It was not the giver’s nor was *t Joe’s even after it was safely placed in his pocket. Joe got 60 days on the roads for his favor to a friend. Ivan Montague, Jr., like mother Eve and the forbidden fruit, “saw that it was pleasant to the eye.” So he appropriated to his own use that which was another’s. It will take Ivan, Jr., just six long months on the roads to right his wrong with the state. Joe Turner Pulley decided the best way to get satisfaction some times is to take it out of a fel low’s hide. He was asked to make a “refund” by the payment of a SIO.OO fine and costs. He objected and appealed to a higher court. Bond was fixed at SIOO.OO. A knotty problem confronted the court, not “who got the thimble”, but who did the electric fan belong to. A. C. Andrews had the fan. The law said it belonged to another. Andrews said he did not steal it. He offered it to the court. The court would not accept it. The court ruled that Andrews was “not guilty of obtaining the electric fan covertly. The fan is being held (by whom we do not know) subject to the order of J. W. Gill. “Thus endeth the first chapter.” Jim Waldroop was a half-witted fellow we knew when a boy. He got a small one-shot pistol called a “dunger”, or more correctly a derringer. Some one caught Jim admiring it one day by the road side. Quickly he thrust it behind him and vehemently affirmed: “I aint got hit!” Well, Russell Graham got hold of one of those forbidden weapons. Some one caught Graham with it. It must have been a migh ty little “dunger”, or else he did not conceal it much, for the judge let him off with the costa and $5.00 contribution to the state. “One of the Jones boys”, B. W. by name, must have found a good piece of road or maybe something else that makes all roada look good. Any way, he got reckless with a car. The court got reckless with Jones' time and decided to loan six months of it to the state just for bed and board. Crop time being here and all hands and the cook being needed for awhile at home, the judge de cided if B. W. would contribute $25.00 to the expense o fthe state, which like Dinah is always needing money,-and pay the costs of his holiday in court, then he might go forth with liberty .in the pursuit of happiness.
