King Haygler’s way of controlling drunks has certain permanent features that are worth con sidering when all else fails. However, if given time, most of those who drink to excess put themselves under the ground. The chiefs of the Catawba nation and officials of the state of North Carolina met at Salisbury May 25, 1756, for a conference over certain treaties . . . And at the confer ence King Haygler, of the Indian nation, made this request of the state representa tives: “I desire a stop may be put to the selling of strong liquors by the white people to my people. ... If the white people must make strong drink let them sell it in their own families.. . I have no strong prisons like you to confine them for it. Our only way is to put them under ground.” oOo BANK CONSOLIDATION o Gurney P. Hood, Commissioner of Banks in North Carolina in an address in Atlanta stated that we do not need more banks, but rather a consolidation of those in existence. He is said to have intimated that the chief cause of so many failures in the depression was due to the many small banks. Our recollection seems to be that some of the biggest banks we had went under. The striving after big things is a dangerous ten dency in business. Only a few years ago strin gent laws with “teeth in them” were passed to curb the growth of big corporations. But times do change! The state and government are into big things—big schools, big departments of every sorts. Our opinion is that we have too much bigness in our public affairs. A small bank well managed should be as safe as a big one. Locally Zebulon’s little bank failed as much because of poor management as any other thing. Loaning thousands of dollars with almost no security, the directors giving it no financial support, a fracfion of the directors actively operating the institution—all these con tributed to its failure. The character of the di rectors and the conservative management of the bank’s affairs have more to do with its success than bigness or anything else. oOo WHO WAS HE? o A gentleman told us about a phone call he had the other night. He said he was sitting in his home about 9:00 o’clock when his phone rang. Answering it, he heard some one say: “Who the h . . . are you?” He replied that he was a higher type man than the one who would NOTICE OF LAND SALE Under and by virtue of the pow ers contained in and in execution of the duties imposed upon me by a certain judgment of the Superior Court of Wake County, North Car olina, entered in an action therein pending entitled “Wake County vs. Bayzil Taylor and Wife,” I will on Tuesday, the 6th day of April,, 1937, at 12 o’clock noon, At the Courthouse door of Wake Coun in the City of Raleigh, N. The above property is sold sub ject to all taxes that have accrued since the year 1933,. This sth day of March, 1937. L. S. BRASSFIELD, Commissioner. March 12—April 2. address him thus on the phone and that if he must use such language he should choose a lower class person to address in keeping with his own character. This man seemed to be wrought up considerably by being so addressed in his home. And who could blame him? A younger man, in speaking of the incident, said that probably 90 per cent of the men of Zebulon use such language. We hardly think there are so many. Yet we know a number of men who are members in good standing intheir churches who unhesitatingly use profanity in any place among men. We doubt very much their good standing with the Lord and also be ing considered even gentlemen by those whose speech is clean, when they indiscriminately use such language. oOo RESERVE FORCES OF CHARACTER o As in business so in society, one lays up capital that meets the stress and strain of de pression or suspicion. We are thinking of the young man tried in court last week for drunken driving and who came out fully vindicated be cause of his previous life as testified to by those who knew him best. His life from childhood so far as we know has been exemplary. With this reserve it was impossible to convict him of the charge. Had he been addicted to drink, previous ly, even the testimony of many witnesses would have been unconvincing to the public at least. Once we heard of a serious charge against a prominent man. Almost every one readily de clared “I’ll never believe he is guilty till I know it.” The “rainy day” morally may come as it does financially with most of us. Each should see that a good deposit of conduct and deeds is laid up in public opinion for the possible day of need. Back of the reputation must be character and backing character must be convictions. It behooves young and old to “lay up treasures” on earth. If one does not need them here, they will enrich him in the beyond. A good reputation is good, but a good char acter is better. oOo “THE TOWN BEAUTIFUL” o Zebulon is not a city and makes no pre tensions to that claim. But it is a good town, one that is known throughout the state. Carl Goerch says it has one of the most beautiful streets of any town he knows. There is ilttle reason why every street might not be beautiful. Quite a deal of building and remodelling are going on in the community these days. While carpenter tools and paint add much to the appearances of things, we believe there is something else that adds more to the geenral appearance of a town than even those things. Shrubbery and seed cost very little. We have native bushes and trees that are abundant and beautiful. The bay is an evergreen and has beautiful flowers. Red bud, or Judas trees, are plentiful a few miles away. Why not plant bay and red bud? Neither grows very tall and would not interfere with phone and electric wires as maple and oak would. Then we have a varied assortment of the more hardy flowers for the yard that cost little and require little attention. Every yard might have these with small money outlay and a min imum of labor. There is plenty of time to pre pare and plant flowers. We hope those who read this will not only join with us in planting trees and flowers, but also insist on their neighbors doing so. Make Zebulon a more beautiful place in which to live.
