THE TEST OF CHARACTER o Someone has said that the test of character is what one would do if he knew no one would ever find it out. This is a fine definition, but we beieve it hardly covers all that makes character or would be its real test. It does not'reach beyond the limitations of men. To think of what our fellowmen would say or do, has much to do with one’s character but there are many things one may do that others may not find out, and these things would impeach his character. So we would make our definition broad enough to cover the knwledge of “Him from whom nothing is hid.” Unless one considers the rightness of his deed in the sight of God, hs character has a flaw that may affect his whole being. Peter asked those who condemned him for his deed whether it was right to obey God or man. When Paul thought he was doing the service of God, and found he was not, he asked: “Lord, what wouldst thou have me do?’’ Any man who does not conscientiously feel the pres ence of God and a sense of direct accountability to him and act accordingly cannot have a right character. Reputation passes with men, but character must stand the test of one who him self is perfect in all his dealings with mankind. “As a man thinketh in hs heart,” good or bad, is the test of character. oOo WAKELON CAMPUS o We have noticed a number of school cam puses in the territory around Zebulon and be lieve Wakelon has the most beautiful we have seen anywhere. Sometime ago we visited acer- Kgpgl New • Meat Market WE SPECIALIZE IN MEATS AND VEGETABLES • Staple and Fancy Groceries jSSgijl F. P. MEDLIN tain high school not many miles away and the children were making a play-ground of the cam pus. Both small and large children were busy running, passing balls and walking everywhere over the school yard. At another school bulbs had been planted along the walks. These were tramped down smooth with the ground. We have noticed frequently in passing Wakelon at recess time that the children keep off the lawn if playing. The grass and shrubbery are well-kept and show an appreciation of beau r ty. And this care is also seen inside the school buildings. The furniture, walls and floors do not show that abuse we noted in a school build ing not far distant a few weeks ago. As parents of Wakelon the people of this community have a personal pride and interest in Wakelon school and we are glad to note that this concern for the grounds and buildings is very evident in their care by the children. It is needless to add that in this the pupils are directed and inspired by the faculty. oOo TAXES AND DEATH Some one has facetiously said there are two things all must do—pay taxes and die. It may have once been a joking matter as to taxes, but it is no longer so. Complaint was made a few years ago in Wake county about high taxes and the Commissioners reduced the property value till taxes were not so heavy. But for the last year or two, they have begun to mount again and if the people do not make protest, the in dications are that they will continue to mount. A bill was passed in the late Assembly in creasing the salaries of county officers. So far as we know there was no protest by the tax payers. Perhaps some office holder was father to the suggestion of more pay. Our own opinion is that the salaries now paid are enough as com pared by what the average man earns in the same class of work. If the officers were not satisfied, then there are plenty of men qualified to do the work who would be glad to fill the po sitions for the salaries received. Now comes the proposition to raise the taxes of all townships in the county 10 per cent, excepting Raleigh township. Neither should be allowed. Raleigh enjoys benefits that the rural communities do not have and it is only fair that the urbanites should pay for what they get. If more money is needed the only way to get it is by taxation. But the farmer when he needs more money and cannot get it, does without. We believe the business of Wake county could be operated for less expenditure. Let’s spend less and we shall need less. Taxes are already too heavy. Nowhere is a policy of economy and re trenchment needed more than in the operation of government. A SNOW MONDAY A truck driver, arriving in Zeb ulon very early Monday morning reported that during a part of the trip from Raleigh snow fell so fast that it hindered sight and caus ed speed of cars to drop to fif teen miles and less per hour. The snow melted as it fell. Rain fell in the afternoon Monday, follow ing heavy rains on Sunday night.
