Coltrane entertained at her home honoring her house guest, Mrs. F. C. McDowell of Siler City, and Miss Beth Kemp, bride elect Bridge was played at four tables and Miss Kemp was the re cipient of gifts at a miscellaneous shower. Miss Grace Coltrane arrived on Tuesday for a two-weeks stay with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Col trane, after which s'he will return to New York City to continue her study of music during the summer. She was accompanied to Zebulon by her roommate, Miss Eleanor Congdon, of Brooklyn, N- Y. Mrs. Dicie Rowland and baby of Rocky Mount visited Mrs. Wallace Temple last Sunday. Miss Mary Leigh Denton was home for the weekend from Wash ington, D. C., where she has a government position. Miss Pattie Rue Denton accompanied her back to spend the week in the capital city. RECENT BRIDE COMPLIMENTED Wake Forest—Mrs. Jesse Free man and Miss Pearl Mangum en tertained jointly at the home of Mrs; Freeman Thursday evening in honor of Mrs. Graham Conn of Zeb ulon, a recent bride Mrs. Conn was formerly Miss Josephine Man gum of Wake Forest. Sharing hon ors with Mrs. Conn was Mrs. Ray mond Keith, also a bride. A color scheme of pink, green,, and white was emphasized in the decorations of sweet peas and mix ed garden flowers. The dining room table was covered with a lace table cloth and centered with a bowl of pink sweetpeasc Several contests were held with I Mrs. Jesse Hollowell and Mrs. Mil lard Joyner winning prizes. The feature of the evening was the presentation of a miscellaneous shower to Mrs. Conn. Mrs. Keith waa presented linen napkins by the hostesses. An ice course was served with decorated cakes. About fifty-five guests enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. Freeman and Miss Mangum. SEEN & HEARD One of the most deceiving things is the art of swinging a scythe. Local Business Shows Upward Trend As summer approaches, WPTF’s local chart of sponsored programs is showing less signs of vacancies than is usually anticipated at this season of the year. NORTH CAROLINIANS ARE STATE JOB CONSCIOUS Raleigh, May 27 —North Carolin ians are State job conscious, ac cording to Chairman Charles G. Powell, of the N. C- Unemployment Compensation Commission, in an nouncing that fully 2,000 residents of the State have applied for jobs with the commission, which will have not more than 100 jobs to give, even when operating at full force. Wake county leads the list with almost exactly one-fourtlh or about 500 anplicants, Guilford has i 56 applicants, Durham 50, Pitt 59, Granville 44, Johnston 40. Bun combe, Wayne, Frankin and Edge combe 36 each. Nash county had 20 applicants for jobs on May 3, when the State total was 1937- PIC The picture above shows Old Glory in a new guise. Different colors were obtained by using American Nitrate of Soda on some strips and omitting its use for other strips. The same method formed the stars.. The sketch was made by L. O. Armstrong of N. Annual Outing To Be Held On The School Ground The annual picnic of the Nash county chapter of the American Farm Bureau Federation will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at the school grounds in Nashville. The Governor was invited, but pressure of other business prevented his at tending. Someone from the state farm burqau will be there to address, the crowd and perhaps other speakers will »be on hand.
