May -11 MILLION FARMS ELECTRIFIED There are now in the United States one million farms that use electricity for lights, machinery, and other mechanical needs. More than half these farms are in the states of California, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan Wisconsin, Indiana, Washington, Il linois and lowa. California alone has more that 100,000 of the million farms using electricity. During the last few years North Carolina has made tremendous gains in the number of users of electricity. It has been proven that the current saves both time and money for the farmer, who has more uses for it than those in al most any other vocation. Since 1919, this department has conducted yearly, with the excep tion of 1935 when Poliomylitis was present, a campaign against these diseases, offering free vaccination to the public. The response has been very gratifying and has been one of the means of reducing the number of cases and the number of deaths from these diseases. Last year there were only twelve cases of typhoid fever reported— eight white and four colored. Two deaths occured among these twelve cas es—one white and one colored. Theer wdre forty-eight cases of dip theria reported. Thirty-nine of these occurred during the month of November, when we werfc threaten ed with a small epidemic which sud denly subsided. There were three deaths reported from diptheria. Vaccination against typhoid fe ver is only one of the seevral means of preventing this disease The other known, approved measures are a safe water supply, some ap proved type of sewerage disposal, and screens to keep out flies and other insects. The only known preventative measure against diph theria is diphtheria vaccination This should be given to infants as soon asi they reach the age of six months —certainly no child should be per mitted to go to the age of twelve months without receiving one dose of toxoid. If parents were to es tablish this principle and practice it, and have the child tested for im munity thre to six months after the first dose of toxoid was ad ministered and. if found suscept ible, repeat the inoculation, diph theria would be eradicated just as typhoid fever has been by vaccina tion and the three above mention ed sanitary measures.
