of Zebulon attended the memorial
serivce at Wakeifeld and took din
ner with her sister, Mrs. H. H.

Mrs. W. P. Richardson of Union
Chapel section spent last week with
her daughter, Mrst Jasper Oakley
Mrs. Oba Horton was rushed to
Mary Elizabeth Hospital last Tues
day. Relatives report she is getting
on fairly well.
Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Hood and child
ren of Boonville visited their mother
Mrs. E. E. Hood, and other rela
tives several days recently.
We are sorry to report Mrs.
Powell Puryear is confined to her
bed and hope she will soon be up.
Many people in this section en
joyed the sermons at Wakefield
last week by Rev. Lucias Evans.
Rev. Sexton of Rocky Mount,
pastor of Union Chapel, with Mr.
and Mrs- O. W. Thorne, called to
see Mrs. Powell Puryear Sunday.
Thursday of last week Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Knott had as supper
guests Mrs. Jim Keith and Rev.
Lucias Evans and family of Knight
dale and Rev. Carl Ousley and wife
of Wendell.
Mrs. Oris Horton’s sister and her
husband of New York visited here
last week.
Mrs. W. M. Hood spent one day
last week with her brother, Roger
Philips of Zebulon.
Mrs. Sallie Horton is visiting her
Son B. K. Horton.
Mr and Mrs. W. E. Critcher and
children of Raleigh called to see
their sister, Mrs. H. H. Hood last
Thursday.
We were sorry to hear of the al
most fatal accident of Miss Eliza
beth Hawkins of this section last
Friday afternoon when at Proc
tor’s lake near here a raft she was
standing on turned over plunging
she and her brother-in-law, Cecil
Carter, in 8 feet of water. Jarvis
Proctor and Devan Barlus who had
also been thrown by the capsizing
float struggled with the pair. From
the onlookers ashore scout Ponton
and Reynolds raced into the water
and swam 100 feet to assist their
troop mates. Those on land watch
ed the rescue and worked with the
girls sister, Mrs. Cecil Carter, who
fainted before the 14 year old boys
reached shore with her sister. Use
ing scouts’ chin hold, Ponton tow
ed her toward the bank alongside,
Reynolds supported her with the
chest carry. Together they hauled
her in. The boy scouts applied the
life saving principles taught them
by W. P. Baker, scout master, and
after five minutes Miss Hawkins
was revived.

see her son, DeWitt Creech, who
resides at B'at Creech’a
Mrs. R. G. Wilder is not able to
be up all the time.
Mrs. Lee and L. A. Hocutt and
their families had as guests thru
the week end Willie Broadwell and
family, of Richmond, Va.
Mrs. Grace Howell and son, Rex,
accompanied her brother, Joe
Richardson back to Towson, Md.,
Sunday. He spent the week end
with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Renfrow, of
Brooklyn, N. Y., were the guests of
W. E Layton and family last week.
Nance Driver and family, of
Hales Chapel, spent Sunday with
L. T. Davis and family.

each Sunday.
Joe Brown, 4-H club member in
Wataugua County, reports that his
baby Toeef cattle gained 108 pounds
in 30 days. The animal is being
grown for the beef cattle club
show at Asheville this fall.
