An Open Letter to the Class of 1941 DEAR FRESHMEN: Why look like a freshman? It just isn t done these days by any girl who can help herself. And that is why we are writing. The seniors have told us what are their pet fashions. The iashion marts have been stitch ing away on swanky new things that we know by experience the seniors will go for in a big and ravenous way. So just in case you might be interested in dressing like a senior, here are a few of the tried and true and new fashions. Corduroy Revived In Thorough Fashion Practically everybody is going to have something in corduroy. You might call it a revival. One of the Northampton (Smith College) shops asked us for it last spring and here it is—in jackets, gored skirts, calots and jerkins (those sleeveless pullovers that go under anything from riding habits to fur coats). You'll be seeing it in pin wale to wide wale versions. And a good part of the time it will be in good Scotch company— paired up with a clan plaid. Clan Plaids In Dark Green and Red Clan plaids are having a highland fling this fall. Those that combine dark green and red are the big favorites. Two of the smartest types of costumes that they come in are the shirtwaist dress, especially with skirt fan pleated all around (and the pleats tucked at the edges so they won t come out no mat ter how much you lie around on them) and the suit w ith the plaid for pleated skirt and lining of corduroy jacket or boxy coat. Or if you don’t fancy those —a separate skirt of the clan plaid, a sweater with the clan plaid woolen for the entire front, a suit combining cashmere jersey in natural with clan plaid. The Drawstring Blouse— A Campus "Natural" The drawstring blouse ought to be all over campus in no time at all. It is a little boy fashion that is just about six months old —a sports blouse with drawstring at the bot tom so it blouses up over the waistline. If you don’t see it on every side in piaid, woolen, velveteen, even in suede, used as a jacket or a blouse —well we’ll eat our new Paris hat, the one with the feathers. Suedes Jackets Are Going to Be Worn Speaking of suede, this is just the spot to warn you that suede is coming back for campus wear. Last year everybody had a tweed jacket and they ought to have this year, too, hut if they have what it takes, they ought to buy a suede one as well. The models just covering the hiptops cost less but if you have more to spend you might go in for the flared back, belted front models, even for a suede skirt or one of those suits with woven tweed skirts, suede jacket with action panel at back and sleeves knitted of the same yarn as in the woven skirt. Beer Jacket In Fall Version We don’t have to say, ''Remember the beer jacket?” if you have been around at all last spring. Well, for fall the beer jacket style is here again. You can wear it over anything, as you did the real beer jackets, only these are in a cut velvet in wide wale that has the rough and ready look of corduroy. And there are some collarless tweed suits with ► jackets that are very much in the beer jacket length and shape. It is adapted from a Schiaparelli coat for fall but every time we look at it we think out loud of beer jackets. Dress, Coat and Skirt Ensembles for Week-Ends If there is anybody who has to be re minded of how handy a three-piece tweed • suit is, we would like to know her. We are talking about the jacket skirt, and topcoat, the topcoat from two-thirds to full length. If you’ve already had one of these, how about a newer version—the dress, coat and extra skirt. You can go away for a weekend and stay for two in one of these outfits, needing nothing more than an extra blouse or sweater. Slacks Matched to Sports or Ski Suit Last spring there were plenty of girls on campus who felt more comfortable in slacks than skirts. They wore denim or flannel ones. For a cool autumn the denim might not be quite as warm as you d like, so we are suggesting the flannel slacks. Just mike sure that they fit. and are not too long and baggy. There s nothing like getting them to match a jacket and skirt so parts can be switched. Or else choose them in gabardine matched to your ski suit. As for ski suits, the fad of wearing them Slalom model) will do service all through the autumn on the fairways for rainy or clear days. SHOOTS FOR CHARITY | The International Bazaar, held recently in New York City for the benefit of under privileged children, attracted a gay crowd on the opening night. Along the midway the most popular booth proved to be the targeteer air pistol shooting gallery where matrons from Park avenue and First avenue vied for shooting honors, and demonstrated that Mrs. Roosevelt isn t the only feminine pistol wielder. Pictured is Miss Dixie Gebbacia and the trophy awarded her for Highlighting Hair Streaked by Sun When you emerge from the usual vaca tion sun-worshipping and get back to town, it’s important to give some attention to re gaining the impeccable appearance you threw to the winds in slacks and a halter. Your nice smooth sunburn will provide an effective contrast to early Fall clothes, but your hair, which will be showing a great deal according to next season’s millinery predictions, is probably streaked from the sun in all the wrong places and presents an unattractive sombre effect. Blondes must be particularly careful; vary ing shades of blonde in the hair give too much of an appearance of a poor bleach or that a bleach is needed. For a remedy, there s a simple treatment that you can use at home by yourself. Beauty experts advise Marchand’s golden hair wash which will restore your hair to an even natural blondeness. It will also eliminate the straw-like quality of hair exposed to a lot of air and sun and will give you a gloss, so vital to hair beauty. For brown haired girls and brunettes whose hair is dry and lifeless from salt water swimming, the golden hair wash is also recommended to perk up the highlights and give an attractive sheen as welL White Kidskin Coat— For Day or Evening In case you haven’t thought much about about campus has reached the proportions that demands having more than one suit or OUTDOOR LUNCHEON The next time the bridge club meets at your house, why not serve the luncheon on your cool porch? It can be both informal and delightful, combining delicious yet sim ple food with the spirit of carefree summer entertaining. PORCH LUNCHEON MENU Grapefruit-Watermelon Cup Qiili Co: Carne Potato Chips "Whole Wheat Muffins Celery - Green Pepper Salad French Dressing Peaches with Cream Chocolate Cakes Coffee The following recipes are for eight serv ings, two tables of bridge. Serve all the food at once on a large table and pass it infor mally. Have plates, silver and napkins ar ranged in stacks. There is no need for the hostess to rise from the table during the luncheon. WHOLE WHEAT MUFFINS (8 muffins). One cup white flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, Vl teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 cup whole wheat flour, 1 egg, 1 cup milk, 4 tablespoons melted butter. Sift white flour once before measuring, then sift flour, sugar, salt and baking powder together. Stir in the whole wheat flour. Beat egg slightly; add milk and combine with the dry ingredients. Stir in the melted butter and fill well-greased muffin tins or glass custard extra parts to make it look like more than one. They do say that colleges like Smith are wearing more gabardine than ever before, but unless you have plenty of red blood in your veins, the 24-ounce snow cloth suits are warmer for wear to class. If you come from the South maybe you had better choose one with fur lining. Don't forget, if you golf as well as ski that a wind- and water resistant jacket to the hip tops (ask for the a fur coat, we have a suggestion to make. All the old favorites are here to choose from again and one of the best "buys” is the long haired caracul coat. But the progressive co eds in the Middle and Far West, we are told, will be wearing white kid-skin. The beauty of a coat of this fur is that it will take the part of an evening wrap without half trying. New Version Os the Bramley Type We don't know quite what to call the dress that we think is a winner for campus. It has been referred to as the Garcon dress. One store called its version The Bramley. If your older sister went to college in the early 1920's she can tell you how practically every girl had one if. her wardrobe. The Original models had a pullover belted blouse with white linen Peter Pan type of collar and cuffs. They buttoned at the back of the neck and had a kick pleat skirt. For this winter they have been revived in very similar versions. Only this autumn, the skirt is pleated all-around. Old Favorites— Velveteen, Cashmere Jersey If you are not quite sure which fabrics to pick out for >our knockabout campus cos tume. just turn back to two that have been popping up every autumn for years and years. One is velveteen, used for the entire dress or for b’ouse with plaid skirt. And the other is natural cashmere jersey, usually alone, but not necessarily so. You can't go wrong on either of these two. Classics You Can Always Depend On There is plenty more we would like to tell you but you probably know' already ail the old answers like—push the sleeves of your sweater up, have a revers ble or plain gabardine raincoat, wear a kerchief over your head peasant fashion if you have your hair up in curlers or it looks like rain, choose a Shetland tweed suit in classic rag lan sleeve fashion or a camel hair coat, wear solid color socks and low hee’ed shoes all day, changing them (if nothing else) for your date at night, have culottes for bi cycling, have a roller hat to fall hack on, have as many parts of your costume match as possible. When it comes to sweateis, skirts and socks and hats, get the best sweaters because it pays in the end—cash mere and Shetland and Brooks twin sets preferred. —From Women's Wear, Sew York City. cups half full of batter.
