Litchford, an, Wake Co. Liquor Control Board, i, N. C. r Sir: a citizen in a position to know the true nt of this community on the liquor t, 1 am writing you. I believe the ma s the people are against an ABC store in n. This precinct voted against liquor lieve the people are still opposed to it. iderstand that the petition offered to prepared even before the decision was your Board to establish a store in Wen was done without the knowledge of izens. It was offered only to those fa ind kept secret from those most op liquor. Many of us did not know that ion was being considered by you till that the store had already been decid- We had no chance to object, protest, way express our desires as citizens, in :r. I believe we could, had we been i opportunity, have presented a peti a majority of the people against the nent of a store in Zebulon. In all fair, y of us feel that you should have given the petition offered and let the other :ard. ; are men in our town who drink liquor ;ed to sign the petition, I understand, it they drink, but said they did not >r made more accessible to them, es are heartbroken because Wake putting liquor on front street to make st possible appeal to their husbands To those who want liquor Wendell is gh for those who will drink and the l would be kept away from our child le morally weak. There are many in unity who feel as 1 do, and they be should be heard in this matter, is not too late, and surely it cannot be it of such serious concern to this com i all justice to those of us who oppose ielieve you should reopen the matter sbe heard by petition or in person. If control is one objective of your Board and the State law, then by making liquor more accessible only aggravates and increases the probability of its consumption. If you will hear us, we shall be glad to bring a representation of our best business, social and religious people to protest against the establishment of an ABC store in Zebulon. Most sincerely yours, THEO. B. DAVIS. WAKE COUNTY ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL BOARD RALEIGH, N. C. Henry E. Litchford, Chairman Jesse J. Henderson Chauncey M. Jones September 13, 1937. Rev. Theo. B. Davis, Zebulon, N. C. * .. My dear Mr. Davis: This will acknowledge receipt of yours of the 13th. Please be advised that before our Board consented to the establishment of a store at Zebulon we had received a petition, dated July 26, 1937, signed by the Mayor, four com missioners, the Town Attorney, and Town Clerk, of Zebulon, and a petition signed by thir ty-eight citizens of Little River Township, re questing the establishment of a store in Zebu. lon. Last week, at their request, a group of citi zens of Little River Township appeared before our Board insisting that a store be located at Zebulon. It was then, responding to this con tinued demand, that we consented to the estab lishment of a store at Zebulon. It had not oc curred to us to open a store at that point until we had received the requests above referred to. In response to this request, we submitted the matter to the State Board of Control, which Board confirmed the selection of Zebulon as a point for a store. We then negotiated with Mr. Flowers, and have leased his store on Arendell Avenue for a term of two years, and have set to work to pre pare the place for our occupancy. You may be assured that the business at Zebulon will be handled in a high class manner, and we believe that if given a fair chance, it will demonstrate to the people of your commun ity that it is wise to undertake to control the sale of whiskey rather than leave its handling as heretofore. It will please us if you will keep your eye on the situation, and will report to us any irregu larities of any character requiring our attention. Very truly yours, HENRY E. LITCHFORD, Chairman.
