DRY INDEPENDENCE DAY
Mexico celebrated on Wednesday
and Thursday of this week the an
niversary of her declaration of in
dependence from Spain. The re
markable feature of the celebration
was all places where intoxicating
drinks are sold, all dance halls and
cabarets were ordered by law to be
closed during the festivities. This
was a part of the campaign now on
to limit the use of liquor in Mexico.
WHEELER DAM DEDICATED
President Roosevelt took part on
last Friday in the dedication of the
Joe Wheeler Dam across the Ten
nessee River 16 1-2 miles from
Muscle Shoals in Ala. This dam is
of concrete, is a mile and a quart
er long and cost $35,000,000. Its
purpose is: First, to form a great
reservoir to hold back flood waters
and help prevent damage and loss;
to extend navigation up the Ten
nessee River by providing about 74
miles for boats to travel; third, to
provide additional hydro-electric
power to the adjacent area, being
at present capable of 90,000 horse
power, with possibilities of expan
sion to four times that amount.
Y. D. CONVENTION HELD
Young Democrats of this state
held the sixth convention last week
at Winston-Salem, electing Arch
T. Allen of Raleigh president of the
organization. They heard Senator
J. W. Bailey on Saturday criticise
present tendencies of government.
The senator was followed by Au
drey Williams, national PWA Ad
ministrator, who sought to refute
arguments put forth by Mr. Bailey.
Among the notables present were
Senator Reynolds, Congressmen
Doughton, Cooley, and H/ancock,
State Treasurer Johnson and State
Treasurer Eure.

VETERANS MAY JOIN CCC
Announcement has been made
that beginning about October first
a limited number of war veterans
may join the civilian conservation
corps. To be eligible a veteran
must have an honorable discharge
and must have served in one of the
following : The Spanish-American
War, 1898-1902; The Moro Expedi
tion, 1898-1902; The Philippine In
surrection, 1898-1902; The Boxer
Rebellion, 1900-1901; The World
War, 1917-1921. Applications may
be sent to the Charlotte office of
the veterans administration.
WAR ON MONKEYS
Farmers in this country wage
war on crows; on squirrels, deer,
or other wild animals as from time
to time damage or destroy crops.
Especially is the corn crop a cause
of the war. But down in Costa Rica
exiled German Jews are fighting
monkeys that have discovered the
fields of Indian corn and at fre
quent intervals all day long swoop
down upon it from the timberlands,
rip off the tender ears and flee back
to their homes in the trees. The
monkeys are of the white-faced
capuchin variety and their robbing
has so discouraged the fanners that
