THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER THE 24TH, 1937
WILSON
By Geo. L. Wainwright
Activities were very pleasing on
the Wilson tobacco market for the
past week and all tobacco farm
ers received more money by selling
on this huge tobacco center.
As sales got underway last Mon
day several thousand farmers rep
resenting every tobacco growing
county in eastern Carolina had de
posited hundreds of thousands of
pounds of tobacco on Wilson’s nine
warehouse floors. The first few
hours of selling brought much en
couragement as the various grades
took an upward trend in price.
Optimism prevailed throughout the
day. For the remainder of the
week prices continued strong and
held to the same price level as was
paid on Monday.
Wilson is offering tobacco farm
ers at this time a market that has
an unexcelled buying corps that
have heavy orders. These buyers
are backed by the strongest tobac
co companies, numbering ten in
all, and have instructions to get
tobacco. This buying personnel is

all grades of leaf.
Wilson is truly setting a pace
this season, and one that would do
any market proud. It is paying a
higher dollar and is making more
new friends this year for the length
of time it has been operating than
has ever before been the case. A
greater quantity of long distance
tobacco is being sold on the local
market this year and high indivi
dual averages are being paid for
this product. Wilson’s long dis
tance grade is picking up daily
and farmers of three states are
patronizing this market.
The Wilson tobacco market has
sold this season through Thurs.,
Sept. 9, a total of 9,201,634 pounds
and has distributed to farmers the
grand total of $1,922,186.57 at a
higher average price.

The aim is to have a fixed price for
peanuts not meant for eating, and
the federal government is expected
to advance funds for payment.
