TENNESSEE-DUKE CLASH ON SATURDAY LOOMS AS “BATTLE OF SOUTH” Durham, N. C., Oct. B—All roads will lead to Durham on Saturday, October 9! If you don’t believe it, ask the Duke Tennessee alumni, the sportswriters, and the thousands of football faithful. For at Durham on Saturday, October 9, Duke's Blue Devils will meet the potent Tennessee Volun teers before a homecoming crowd at Duke Stadium which will fill the horseshoe’s 35,000 capacity. The sportswriters are calling this meet ing, which is the first for Duke on home soil, the “Battle of the South” Duke will be out for blood in this ball game—will be seeking revenge for the heartbreaking blot upon the Blue Devil record a year ago in Knoxville when a midget back on Major Bob Neyland’s squad roster —his name was Red Harp—grab bed a punt in the last two minutes of play and scampered 82 yards for the touchdown which gave Tennes see 15 points to Duke’s 13 at the final gun. And one of the south’s oldest and greatest coaching rivalries — that between Coach Wallace Wade of Duke and Coach Bob Neyland of Tennessee —will be taken up again in the clash of the 1936 editions of the Vols and Blue Devils. It all started back in 1928 when Wade was making coaching history at Alabama and Neyland was be ginning his third season at the helm of Tennessee. Neyland won that first one, 15-13. It’s been going on ever since in a slam-bang, ding dong fashion which has produced more fine football and more breath less moments than any competition of its kind. Wade won one and dropped one to the Vols at Alabama after the opening blasts of his rivalry with Tennessee’s Major Bob in 1928. Then, with his shift to Duke, Wally found Neyland’s boys belligerent to his cause as ever when they romp ed over his first Blue Devil produc tion in 1931, 25-2. The Dukes could do no better at Knoxville the next year when Breezy Wynn’s last-min ute place-kick and Beattie Feathers’ great running downed them again, 16-13. But in 1933 at Durham, in a game often spoken of as the great est ever played in North Carolina, Wade got even. All-American Fred Crawford took charge of the after noon’s procedure, stopped Beattie Feathers cold, and Duke won, 10-2. Randolph County farmers report the best lespedeza crop in years and say they will have much seed in ad dition to a fine hay crop.
