THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29th, 1937 Old Age Pensions Thousands of Dollars Due Workers Under Old-Age Provisions Lying Unclaimed In Treasury, Stac ey W. Wade, Manager of Raleigh Field Office of So cial Security Board Says Raleigh, North Carolina, October 19.—Thousands of dollars are ly ing unclaimed in the United States Treasury because those to whom the money now due under the old age insurance provisions of the So cial Security Act have not filed claims for the amount due them, Stacey W. Wade, Manager of the Raleigh Field Office of the Social Security Board, which serves this area, said today. A large number of workers in covered employment who have reached 65 since January 1, 1937, the estates or relatives of eligible workers who have died since De cember 31, 1936, apparently are un aware the Social Security Board is making lump-sum payments now to those eligible persons who file claims, Mr. Wade says. The same situation which exists in this section seems to exist thru out the country, inasmuch as up to August 1 the number of claims filed throughout the country for lump-sum payments totalled only a fraction of the 320,000 lump-sum payments actuarial expects esti mated would fall due during the calendar year of 1937, Mr. Wade said. “In Region IV , comprising NORTH CAROLINA, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, there have been 1,712 claims filed to date. This is only a part of the number the Social Security Board believes due and would pay if those eligible filed claims. “There have been 389 claims fil ed in North Carolina. The Raleigh Field Office has received 124 claims. The number of claims filed in other States in Region IV, up to the end of September, are: Dis trict of Columbia, 151; Maryland, 601; Virginia, 339; and West Virginia, 332. “It is probable that many per sons to whom lump-sum payments are due have not filed claims be cause they do not know the Social Security Board is making such payments now. They may be con fused by the wide notice given the fact that payment of monthly old age benefits will not begin before January, 1942. “Another reason may be that the sums due to many persons are small. The lump-sum payment amounts to 3 1-2 per cent of the to tal wages of the eligible worker. For example: Suppose wages to talled $1,000; the 3 1-2 per cent lump-sum payment would be $35; if wages totalled SIOO the lump sum payment would be $3.50. Many workers seem doubtful about what it meant by ‘total wages’. Total wages, under the Act, means the sum of all the wages paid by all employers for all the time an em ployee worked in covered employ ment after December 31, 1936, and prior to death or reaching 65, not counting wages over $3,000 from any one employer. Naturally the lump-sum payment due a man who reached 65 on January 3, after be ing paid for one working day, will not be as great as the amount due to the man who received an equal daily wage every working day since last December 31 till now. “Yet another reason many eli gible persons have not filed claims seems to be they do not know they are eligible. Lump-sum payments are now due to two groups of per sons: “First, to the worker himself who has reached 65 since January 1, 1937, and who has been paid wages for work done as an em ployee since December 31, 1936, and before he reached 65, if any employment which is not specifical ly excepted under the old-age ben- J efit provisions of the Act; “Second, to the estate or rela tives of a worker, no matter what his age, who has died since De cember 31, 1936, provided the de ceased worker had been paid wages for work done as an employee, af ter December 31, 1936, and before he rp arhed 65, in employment which is not specifically excepted under the old-age benefit provi sions of the Act. “Every assistance will be given by the Raleigh Field Office of the Social Security Board to those who inquire about payments or who wish to file claims.” ADMINISTRATOR’S NOTICE Having qualified as Administra tor of the Estate of Tonie Leach, deceased, late of Wake County, North Carolina, this is to notify all persons having claims against the Estate of said deceased to exhibit them to the undersigned at 10005 Raleigh Building, Raleigh, North Carolina, on or before the 25th day of September, 1938, or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their re covery.
