Mrs. Clarence Pearce had as visitors on Wednesday of this week her sisters, Mrs. John H. Norwood, of Bayleaf, and Miss Stella Lee Jones, who is in Ra leigh for the winter. A brother, Woodrow Jones, is also visiting Mrs. Pearce, from Washingtotn, D. C. The Home Rebekah Lodge, of Goldsboro, will stage their first annual Thanksgiving Ball and Floor Show, the proceeds to be turned over to the OdtT Fellows Orphan Home, of Goldsboro. Miss Katie Pierce, Miss Gladys Harris, Miss Hilda Perkins, and Mrs. John Hinton were appointed as dance committee. The ball, which is to be held at Hotel Goldsboro, Thanksgiving Eve, features Billy Crow and his orchestra. Dr. J. F. Coltrane, who has been incapacitated for work for several days, is rapidly improving and ex pects to be in his office next Mon day. Mrs. Lorenzo Temple with her two youngest sons, Tommie and Alton, visited her mother, Mrs. Martha Hoyle, in Henderson Mon day. Mrs. Hoyle is spending the winter in Henderson with her son, Dr. Irby Hoyle. Mrs. E. W. Hood has been sick for two weeks, but is slowly im proving. Miss Pansy Matthews, of Bes semer City, was the week end guest of Miss Inez Pitts. Miss Matthews is a member of the fac ulty of the Elizabeth City schools. Miss Inez Pitts, who has had a vacation from school-teaching while the pupils picked cotton, has returned to her work in Stan ly county. Mayor Wallace Chamblee and Atty. F. D. Finch went last week to Findlay, Ohio, on business for the town. Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Chamblee went on Tuesday of last w r eek to Greensboro to see their new grandson, Burke McConnell, Jr., who was bom on Monday. His mother -was before marriage, Miss Doris Chamblee. Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Jones, of Raleigh, announce the birth of a daughter, Ann Thurston, at Rex Hospital on October 29. Mrs. Jones was formerly Miss Elise Debnam, of Zebulon. Mrs. T. M. Conn had all her children home last Sunday except Mrs. C. V. Whitford, of Durham, who was ill. Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Dice, of Norfolk, were here for the week end; Mr. and Mrs. Rus sell Stephenson, of Wilson, came for Sunday; Mr. and Mrs. Gra ham Conn, of Zebulon, joined the rest of the family for the day. Pippin went to Siler City on Wednesday of this week to visit Mrs. Helen Whitley. A. V. Medlin, who has equipped his own fireworks plant and is now manufacturing in Zebulon, has as bookkeeper for his business Walter Ramseur, formerly of Ra leigh. Mrs. R. Vance Brown was hos tess to her bridge club last week, Mrs. L. E. Long and Mrs. Robert Dawson winning prizes for high and low score respectively. Mrs. Leroy Harris won guest prize. Prizewinners in the amateur con test and Hallowe’en party at Wake lon last week were: Charles Hor ton and Hilda Winstead first; Ru by Bridgers and Daphne Johnson, second; Doris Kimball, third. Hunt mo tored to Littleton Sunday to visit his uncle. Middlesex Doings Miss Francis Knight has been sick for some time with asthma. The members of the Middlesex Baptitst church put on a baby pa rade last Saturday evening. This was to help raise funds to build the church. Helen Jean Lewis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Lewis, won the silver loving cup. Harold Brown won second prize. The babies that won the parade prize were the daughters of Mrs. N. G. Bryan, Mrs. Mary Green and Mrs. Frank Manning. Mrs. A. D. Harris and daugh ter, Janet Louise, of Bailey, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Lewis and daughter spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lewis. Mr. Pettigrew Price, of Zebulon, spent the week end with Mr. Ran- dolph Johnson. Mrs. Bessie Hales is ill at her home. Mr. and Mrs. Otha Johnson and family visited his parents Sunday. Work is progressing well on the Middlesex Baptist Church. Preliminaries For The J. 0. U. A. M. Contest Nov. 11 On November 11th the prelimi naries for the Junior Order state wide original oration and essay con test on the subject of American will be held in our local High schools. Each Senior High School boy is eli gible in the oration and each Senior High School girl in the essay con test. These are to be judged upon composition, memory and delivery by three disinterested judges. The local winners will represent his and her school in the District contest to be held on November 22 at some local point in the District, said place to be announced later. The successful contestants will be given a medal. The winners of both the essay and oration contest in the fourteen Eastern Junior Order Districts of the state and the winers in the four teen Western Districts will compete in their respective sections, in some central point in said areas, on the night of Feb. 22 and the champion girl and boy for the Eastern section and the girl and boy for the West ern section will then be selected. The contest to select the state wide winers will be held in Char lotte at the State Council Meeting of the Junior Order U. A. M. on August 23, 1938. The boy will be given a tuition scholarship to the State University of North Carolina and the girl winning will be given a tuition scholarship to Meredith College. These respective institu tions have donated these scholar ships. Mr. Victor R. Johnson, of Pitts boro, State Councilor of the Junior Order, U. A.
