WAKE COUNTY HEALTH DEPT. FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, 1937 There were 12 cases of diphtheria reported this month, five in one family. One death was reported. Scattered throughout the city and county are isolated cases of whoop ing cough, most of them among preschool children, which indicates that we are in for a small long drawn-out epidemic of whooping diseases reported. Os this number, 61 are classified as childhood dis eases. Among them are whooping cough, diphtheria, measles, and scarlet fever. Venereal diseases still head the list with 50 cases re ported. The Schick test was given to 163 children from the first, second, and third grades. There were six new cases of tu berculosis reported. Four tubercu lous patients were admitted to the Wake County Sanitorium, and 53 persons attended the diagnostic clinics. The examination of children at this time of year is always an im portant part of work in any health department. During the month, we inspected and examined white chil dren, 1,755, colored, 1,077. Os the total, 307 were referred to physi cians and specialists for treatment. In our follow-up work, there were 192 field and office visits made in behalf of defective children. Through the Division of Oral Hy giene of the State E'oard of Health, we had a colored dentist working for six weeks. He visited 6 schools and examined 508 children. Os this number, treatment was given to 306. He made 17 classroom health talks; attendance of 1,093. In the laboratory, we made 292 examinations of specimens. There were 443 visits and re visits made to food-handling es tablishments. In the field of sanitation, there were 19 homes sanitated, and 822 visits to private premises. The milk inspection service for Wake County includes 92 dairies, dairy farms, dairy plants, and sour cream farms under supervision. There were 107 visits made. There were 253 cows tested for diseases. There were 78 miscellaneous examinations. There were 214 live births re ported, white 142 and colored 72. Stillbirths 7, white 3, colored 4. Total number of deaths 117, white 82, colored 54. Deaths under one year, 5; white 2, colored 3. Deaths from tuberculosis 5, white 3, color ed 2. Death from diphtheria 1. PLAYGROUND NEWS These crisp autumn days outdoor games are very good for boys and girls after being in school all day. Grown-ups, too, need some recrea tion. Two new courts have been erect ed on the play ground and several new games are being played, in cluding deck tennis, badminton, paddle tennis, volley ball, football, horse shoes, etc. Boys and girls, men and women are invited to come to our play ground and learn to play.
