IN THE FIRELIGHT • ——————— They have been far, who sit with quiet faces On which the firelight glows this winter night, Selecting from their treasury of places Sails out of dawn, stars on a moun tain height, The way a steeple on an island lift ed Like song, a waterfall that seemed to start From clouds on which the dust of gems had drifted— They had the world and with it filled the heart. Or they have stayed, who sit be fore the embers With firelight on their faces all their lives On land they loved. Each one of them remembers Grain’s golden waves and bees around the hives, The tang and sweet of orchard, mow, and bin— They had the heart and formed a world within. —Glenn Ward Dresbach In Christian Science Monitor.
