THE ZEHULUJN KEI'UKU. KKKIIUIN NikUTH r A Ui >l IV A tout* Narrative Report Wake Co. Health Dept. For Nov. The tuberculosis death rate for all ages ranks seventh among caus es of death. From Ages twenty to thirty-five, it ranks first. A few years ago the tuberculosis death rate for all ages stood at the head of the list. Today the colored tu berculosis death rate is about 2 1-2 times greater than the white tu berculosis death rate. It has been known for many years that cows are susceptible to tuberculosis and frequently suffer with the disease. In 1917, Ameri can veterinarians adopted a policy of using the tuberculin test, and of slaughtering all infected cattle to protect lion-infected members of the herd. In response to repeated general application of these mea sures, the former wide-spread me nace of tuberculosis has practical ly disappeared from the United States. Early routine testing in this county has revealed only two reactors in the ten years. About this time it was recogniz ed that 3 to 7 per cent of children had scrofula and tuberculosis of the bone, which infection was trans mitted from infected cattle to chil dren through milk. Tuberculosis of the bovine type is seldom seen to day. If as much stress and scientific knowledge had been practiced in controlling tuberculosis in the hu man race as has been done in con trolling tuberculosis among cat tle, we believe that in the fifty five years which have elapsed since the bacillus was discovered, the human race today would be as free of tu berculosis infection as the dairy cattle are in this county and the United States. The routine necessary to accom plish this is identical with the one which has eradicated bovine tuber culosis. The animals spreading the disease must be properly disposed of. The cow to the slaughter house, and the human being to the sana torium. For November diseases reported as follows: Whooping Cough 123 Chicken Pox 13 Diphtheria 6 Measles 1 Scarlet Fever 3 Tuberculosis 3 Syphilis 71 Gonorrhea 6 In our school work, we inspected and examined 3.131. 790 children referred for medical care. 783 vis its made.
