Boatwright Lists
Colleges’ Limits
Colleges furnish neither brains
nor education and cannot guaran
tee their graduate* “money-mak
ing jobs,” President W. F. Boat
wright of the University of Rich
mond told a student convocation
yesterday.
“The only way to have brains
is to be born with them,’ Tie as
serted. “The only way to get any
education is to get it yourself,”
and as for the financial benefits
of higher education “colleges are
getting shyer and shyer about
saying their graduates will make
a lot of money.”
He said that for men of su
perior native intelligence, colleges
can:
“Furnish a place in which you
can grow.”
“Furnish an environment for
friendships.”
‘'Teach you how to think.”
Dumbbells Waste Time
The university president pre
faced his remarks with the as
sertion that in most cases it is
a waste of effort for students of
low native intelligence to attend
college. Many institutions of su
perior standing, Dr. Boatwright
added, admit only students who
were in the upper half of their
(graduating classes in high and
preparatory schools.
Occasional exceptions are made
to this general rule, he added,
FOR
TRAVEL COMFORT
(Vatolina, C^cacLe*
Why subject your nerves to useless drivi
strain when you can lean back in a soft, indi

relax —while gliding smoothly on to your desti
nation? Ride Carolina Coaches and you will
always arrive fresh, rested and alert. And in
addition to supreme comfort, safety and un
equalled travel economy are also your? when
you go the Carolina Coach way. Many fares
lower than f l Ac a mile.

THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, JAN. 28,1938
I but he pointed out that in the
! University of Richmond, an in
stitution which has an enrollment
of more than 1,600 students, fewer
| than 30 were in the lower half of
their graduating classes.
| “The emphasis in college edu
cation has shifted from teaching
to learning,” President Boatwright
said. “The education the student
gets he must get for himself. The
I hard-boiled professors insist that
the students educate themselves
in library, classroom and labora
tory.”
He told the students that a
competent faculty of learned pro
fessors, adequate libraries, and
laboratories, and a beautiful cam
pus furnish “tne environment in
which youth can grow, where youth
is tempted to test himself."
As for the professors, their tasks
are “to guide, to stimulate, and to
inspire.”
President Boatwright empha
sized the value of making friend
ships and asserted that “in state
and national governments affairs
of consequence are settled by
groups of friends who have a like
mind about the job at hand.”
In concluding his address, Pres
ident Boatwright said while one
of the important functions of
higher education is to “teach peo
ple how to think,” colleges “should
not attempt to teach people what
to think.”

VERSE TO A BUSINESS MAN
Sock him on the kisser, put him on
the pan, •
Roll him in the gutter—He’s a busi
ness man.
Pillory the sucker, poke him in the
eye,
Jump upon his torso —He’s a busi
ness guy!
Has he built a business to enor
mous heights?
Brand his as a cheater-Never mind
his rights!
Does he give employment? Is the
payroll big?
Put the bum in irons! Toss him
in the brig!
Does he pay in taxes what the law
calls for?
Why, the dirty reptile should be
paying more!
Blast him in the headlines, charge
some crooked acts,
Let this be your slogan: “Anything
but facts!”
Has he made some money ? Get his
scalp today!
Say, where does he think he’s liv
ing anyway?
