, WHAT IS TRUTH?
O, I have sung of hope when I was
hopeless;
Os love, when, all unloved, I
stood alone;
Os courage when my heart with
fear was trembling;
Os happiness that was to me
unknown.
Did He who sees and judges every
action
Hold me as one who lied? Or
did each word
I spoke in longing or in despera
tion
Go up as urgent prayer to Him
who heard ?
I cannot say; and yet I hold it
better
To speak of brave, bright things;
for it may be
That there are others, lonely, tired
and frightened,
And needing comfort, e’en from
one like me.

THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, APRIL 8,1938
Mrs. Robert Dawson entertained
the members of her bridge club on
Wednesday evening of last week.
Elmo Dunn and Sprite Barbee
are home for spring holidays from
Wake Forest College.
W. H. Chamblee, D. D. Cham
blee, W. N. Pitts and P. F. Massey
went on Thursday of last week to
Plymouth and Jamesville to see
the fishermen pull in their big nets.
Mrs. Wallace Chamblee’s 7B
grade at Wakelon was one of the
( first to become 100 percent in Red
Cross contributions last week.
Nancy Whitley, daughter of the
C. V. Whitleys, has been sick with
measles during the past week.
Prof. Thomas Kemp arrived last
week from Atlanta, Ga., to spend
a few days with his mother, Mrs.
J. A. Kemp, and other relatives.
Unusual Bulb
On last Saturday Mrs. M. B.
Chamblee sent to the Record’s as
sociate editor a daffodil that
measured four and one-half inches
across with trumpet two inches in
length. This, however, was less
remarkable than the fact that one
bulb bore four such blossoms,
which is probably a record.
Miss Lena Jones of Edenton,
formerly a member of Wakelon’s
faculty, spent the week end here
with Mrs. J. K. Barrow.
W. B. Braswell is at home again
after four years in the navy where
he was gunner’s mate on a sub
marine at the time -of his dis
charge. Unfortunately, since ar
riving here last Thursday he has
lost his folder containing some pa
pers of special importance to him
and for which he offers a reward.
See his ad in this issue of the Rec
ord. He thinks the folder was lost
either in Zebulon or between here
and the Braswell home near Hales
Chapel.
Mesdames W. C. Campen, W. G.
Temple, H. C. Wade, A. V. Medlin
and R. H. Brantley went to Ra
leigh Monday to make a tour of
the gardens opened to the public
on that day and Tuesday by the
Raleigh club.
Miss Marjorie Birmingham of
Hamlet is visiting Miss Frankie
Hall.
Mrs. E. C. Stallings, who has
spent nearly three weeks at Mary-
Elizabeth hospital, returned home
Tuesday, and is much improved.
MRS. KEMP HONORED
Mrs. J. A. Kemp was surprised
last week when, at the close of the
program at the Home Demonstra
tion club meeting, she was present
ed with a birthday cake bearing the
requisite number of candles, and
with gifts from members present.
Mrs. Kemp is the oldest member of
the club in years, and is also a
charter member. She is among
those who worked at removing the
bark from the logs used in build
ing the clubhouse, and has taken an
active part in every project put on
at any time. Many recall her as
the “primer pupil” in the Deestrick
School staged some years ago to
raise funds to help pay for the
club building, and remember her
rendering of ‘ Twinkle, Twinkle,
Little Star” as one of the high
lights of the program. Thus it
can easily be understood that they
delighted to honor her on the
77th anniversary of her birth.
Dawson Charged
With Fraud
John G. Dawson, former Demo
cratic state chairman, resident of
Kinston, has been charged with
fraud in the handling of funds de
rived from the settlement of af
fairs of the Farmers Bank and
Trust Co., of LaGrange, which
failed about 15 years ago. Since
that time Dawson is said to have
collected thousands of dollars as
salary for his services, not to
speak of amounts not accounted
for, which are said to be around
$45,000. Commissioner Gurney P.
Hood claims that a previous dis
charge passed by Judge Sinclair
was allowed because he was deceiv
ed about the matter.
