A son was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Alford Thursday night. H. Crawford Kearney of Frank linton, a candidate for Judge of Recorder Court of Franklin Coun ty in the second primary, was playing a political game (hand shaking) with the base ball fans here Saturday afternoon. Robert Brantley, M. L. Hag wood, Irvin Taylor, and Berkley Upchurch attended a ball game at Emporia, Va., Sunday. Mrs. Lawrence Tracy of Kinston visited in Pilot Tuesday. Mr. Vernon Williams and fami ly of Raleigh visited his mother Sunday. Miss Helen Pippin of Norfolk, Va., spent this week end with her mother. The Chevrolet truck of Mr. Zol lie Alford that was stolen last Tuesday v/as recovered by the own er Thursday near South Hill, Va. Mr. Percy Jones and family of Raleigh spent this week end with Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Jones. Mr. Guy Gold and Jerry Hag wood visited Sanford Sunday. Among those attending the Church Dedication service at Pearces Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Stallings, Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Ray, Mrs. Curtis Ray, and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Pearce. Mrs. Lee Medlin returned from Rex Hospital Sunday after spend ing several weeks there. In an effort to secure support in the second primary in Franklin County, C. T. Nicholson, candidate for the House of Representatives, visited Pilot Saturday night with a string band. Manager Fred Richardson, Floyd Stallings and Jerry Hagwood went to Raleigh and Selma Friday in the interest of the ball club. Sunday, June 19, 1938, a fam- j ily reunion and birthday dinner was given in honor of Floyd Lew is, who was 29 years of age. Those attending the dinner w r ere Mrs. B. E. Lewis, Estine, Mamie, Lizzie, Daisy and Magdaline Lewis, his sisters, and Bennie and Foster Lewis, his brothers; Mr. and Mrs. John L. Ray, Mrs. Early Lewds, Mrs. Anne and Ruby Mullen of Pi lot, Mrs. Lily Williams and family of Middlesex; Mr. and Mrs. 0. D. House, Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Cam eron and family of Raleigh; Mr. and Mrs. Oris Strickland, Mr. and Mrs. Bertie Murray of Stanhope; Mr. and Mrs. Haley Jenkins of Spring Hope; Mr. and Mrs. Wat son Strickland and family, Preston Massey, Earnest Anderson and Lonnie Strickland of Rocky Cross; and Miss Nannie Letchinworth of Rocky Mount, and other friends. SPORT NEWS The Pilot nine broke even this week. They won one game and lost one. Mr. Fred C. Richardson has been elected manager of the ball club. The. team won the first game under his management. Con gratulations Manager Fred. The team has been ably strengthened by the addition of a new pitcher. We lost the game at Benson Wednesday afternoon, June 15, with a score of 8-7 in a 10-inning game. An eighth-inning home run by Jim Bullock, gave Pilot a 3-1 vic tory over Corbett-Hatcher in a Johnston County League game at Pilot Saturday. We play Selma at home Wednes day and Smithfield Saturday. Come out and enjoy ,the fun. Continued rains, cool weather and some hail throughout eastern North Carolina have hindered the growth of cotton and tobacco fields are “grassy." CORINTH We had good attendance at Sunday School and preaching ser vices this week end. Our pastor, Rev. W. D. Stancil, preached and we were all glad to learn that his wife, who has been ill a long time, is a little better now. Mrs. Lina Hocutt has returned from Rex hospital and is improv ing slowly. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Liles Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Leon Williamson of near Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Liles of near Clayton. Miss Annie Pearle Moody spent last week with friends in Raleigh. Mrs. Preston Glover who under went an operation in Rex hospital recently is improving. Among those visiting at the J. T. Davis home this week end were Mrs. J. W. Boykin of Kenly, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Denton of near Selma, and Mrs. A. H. Maydon and children of Emit. Miss Lucille Bunch is on our sick list. We hope she will soon be well. Mr. H. B. Andrews doesn’t seem to be improving. Miss Annie Mae Fowler accom panied Miss Cassie Leigh Wilder, Mr. L. H. Williamson and Wilson Gay to Ellerbe where they were the guests of Mr. Williamson’s parents Sunday. Mrs. C. A. Whitaker and son, J. C., of Trenton, N. J., are spending some time with her daughter, Mrs. S. K. Richardson, this sum mer. Benjamin Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Davis, underwent an appendicitis operation in Rex hos pital Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Liles of Louisburg visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis Sunday and their daughter, Glen nie, who had visited the Davises for two weeks returned with them. Misses Ruby Sealey and Adelle Andrews and friends of Archer Lodge, visited Misses Magdalene and Mozelle Davis Sunday night. On Saturday afternoon a base ball team from Emit and one from Woodax-d’s Cross Roads met on the school ball diamond for a close ly contested game. The Emit team won over the other with a score of 7-6. A sign, donated to the school by the class of ’3B, bearing the name of the school and class, has been purchased and hung in the arch of the high school building. It is in the school colors, blue and gold, and adds to the appearance as w T ell as being informative to travelers. Misses Ethelle and Betty Bunch were the week end guests of Miss es Matred Bunch and Marie Deans of Clydes Chapel. Mr. J. A. Bunch and family of New London, and Mr. H. 0. Hicks and family of Badin, were among those who visited in the L. V. Bunch home during the week end. Mrs. Annie Bissette, who has been critically ill for some time, is improving. Our church bell has been hung at last. On Monday of this week the men of the community met and put up the bell and made the seats for the new wing of the church. We are hoping our attendance will grow so that w r e use all of the new seats as well as the old. ROADS There has been a lot of rain-in this section the past w r eek. Many from this community at tended the dedication services held at the new Pearces church Sunday. Misses Lucille and Bettie Gray Baker spent the week end with their sister, Mrs. Luther Perry of Pearces. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bunn and children of the Bethany communi- jty spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wester. Miss Nellie Vaughn spent last week with Misses Novelle and Thelma Bunn of Knightdale. Miss Thelma Bunn is spending this week with Miss Nellie Vaughn. Miss* Polly Baker spent Satur day night with Miss Ruth Pearce. Miss Vera Mae Pearce is visit ing relatives in Zebulon. Mr. Jack Lewis Barnett of New Hope spent Saturday night with Mr. Malcolm Pearce. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Timberlake called on Mr. and Mrs. Georgia Baker Sunday morning. The B. T. U. of Bethany church presented a program at Bethle hem church Sunday night to ac quaint us with the duties of this union that we are planning to or ganize soon. Mrs. Eva Fowler of Raleigh vis iter her brother, Mr. M. W. Perry of Riley Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. David Wester vis ited the latter’s sister, Mrs. Lucas Murray in a Rocky Mount hospital Tuesday, where she will undergo an operation for goitre. The Riley baseball team defeat ed Rolesville Saturday, the score being 2 and 3. WAKE X ROADS Most eveeryone has about caught up with work in this sec tion and the crops are looking fine after the rains. Mrs. J. C. Massey entertained the members of her class (the pri mary) Saturday afternoon at the dome of Miss Dorothy Liles, the as sistant teacher. There were 13 children present, all of whom had a nice time. After a number of games were played, milk shakes and vanilla wafers w*ere served. Mrs. Lillie Liles, Mrs. J. C. Mas sey and Mrs. S. B. Blackley and Miss Dorothy Liles were also pres ent. Miss Hazel Watkins of near Rolesville, spent the week end at Miss Grade Holden’s. Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Poole and daughter, Mrs. R. S. Jones, and Carson Jones spent the day Sun day at the home of their sister and daughter, Mrs. H. M. Poole. There will be a B. T. U. Study Course given at Wake X Roads Church beginning Monday night, June 27. Everyone is invited to attend. Hope there will be a large attendance. There were 127 present at Sun day School Sunday. We hope for more next Sunday. Mr. R. V. Young, Elvin Perry, Horace Poole and Eric Pulley had a grand time and good luck at Sunset Lake fishing last Thursday. The members of the Intermedi ate Girls’ Class were entertained at a social at the home of Miss Earlene Horton. After games, lemonade, sandwiches and cakes were served. Everyone had a nice time. Mrs. Chester Poole is teacher. HALESCHAPEL It seems that we are having plenty of rain these days. More rain, more rest. Too much rain is not for the best. Mr. Guy Tippett of Morehead City spent the week end at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Tippett. Mr. Earl Lewis .and family of Knightdale were the Sunday visi tors of Mr. and Mrs. Glynn Hinton. Mr. and Mrs. Braxton H. Cham blee spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Will E. Bunn. Miss Ruby Martin of Raleigh spent the week end at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edd Martin. Miss Eloise Tippett of Zebulon was the week end guest of Miss Virginia Tippett. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Corbett of the Corinth section spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. Corbett’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Corbett. Mr. Arthur Creech and family spent Sunday in the home of Mr. S. W. Creech near Emit. Miss Katie Corbett has return ed home after spending last week with her sister Mrs. Will Hinton. Mr. and Mrs. Callie Powell vis ited relatives near Wilson Sunday. Little Miss Lula Maude Ben nett is spending some time with her aunt, Mrs. Braxton Chamblee, near Zebulon. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Strickland were visitors in this community Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brown were Durham visitors Tuesday. Be sure to come to Sunday School Sunday morning at 10 o’clock.
