H. Herring had as her guest for the weekend her cousin, Miss Elizabeth Harrill of Ruther fordton, who is attending summer school at Wake Forest. Mrs. Pattie Harrison has re turned from a visit to her son, S. M. Harris, and family in Lumber ton and is now with her daughter, Mrs. F. D. Finch. Mrs. J. A. Strickland of St. Pet ersburg, Fla., and Blowing Rock is a guest in the home of her sister Mrs. W. C. Campen. The many friends of Mrs. Ebbie Stallings rejoice that she is now able to be up in her wheel-chair for a part of every day, and is making gradual progress toward complete recovery. The Record’s associate editor gratefully acknowledges the gift of a year’s subscription to The Southern Garden from Steams En graving Company, Raleigh. Her friends here will be con cerned to know that Mrs. Lela B. Horton of Wendell, formerly of Zebulon, went on last Sunday to Mary-Elizabeth Hospital where on Monday she underwent an opera tion. Mrs. Horton’s condition is thought to be satisfactory. Miss Eunice Outlaw, daughter of Mrs. J. B. Outlaw, was one of 95 on the first honor roll at Meredith College for the spring semester. B. H. Johnson has returned to Zebulon after treatment last week at Mary-Elizabeth Hospital. The Johnsons will be here the greater part of the summer, making head quarters with Mrs. Johnson’s par ents, the Pittman Stells. R. L. Isaacs Seriously Hurt R. L. Isaacs of Raleigh, well known in Zebulon, was seriously hurt last week when he fell at a roller-skating rink and broke his hip. He is now in a hospital with the broken bone in a cast and must stay in bed for an undetermined period of time. Small Hazel Chamblee Herring came from Raleigh on Wednesday of last week to visit her grand parents, the M. B. Chamblees. A Zebulon housekeeper asserts that the nicest surprise she has had for months was when she or dered fish recently for a dinner at which she had unexpected guests— and the fish were sent up dressed and ready for cooking. That was a favor shown her by the City Market. Mr. and Mrs. Graham Conn are spending this week at Morehead Oity. The editor and Mrs. Davis ap preciate an announcement of the mamage of Miss Mary Meisen heimer of Raleigh to Dr. J. O. Bai ley of Chapel Hill. In her girlhood the bride was a special friend of the Davises, who wish all happi ness for the newly-weds. Mrs. Lee Roy Harris and chil dren, who have been spending some time at Albemarle beach, near Ply mouth, returned home Tuesday, mouth, returned home Tuesday. With them came Shelton McNair, young nephew of Mr. Harris, to visit in Zebulon. Mrs. Clem Godwin of Coates is \ isiting her father, J. T. Robert son. She expects to go home Fri day. R. V. Bfrown and Z. J. Robertson went to New York to attend the Schmeling-Louis fight on Wednes day night. Nathan H. Pepper, head of Phy sical Education Department and Athletic Director of Wakelon High School, Zebulon, is this week com pleting an intensive course in “Materials and Methods of Teach ing Safety” conducted at New York University by the School of Education and Division of General Education in cooperation with the National Conservation Bureau. Mr. Pepper is making a special investigation entitled ‘‘A Suggest ed Course for Civics in Rural Schools of Wake County” as part of his work for the course, which is being attended by teachers and directors of health, physical edu cation and safety in schools and public departments in various parts of the United States. Mrs. R. E. Pippin and children, Ray, Donald and Julian, left on Wednesday to spend the rest of the summer at Catskill Bay, N. Y. P MRS. CONN HOSTESS Mrs. Graham Conn entertained her bridge club Friday evening, June 17th, at her home. Summer garden flowers filled the room where tables were ar ranged for bridge. After the games prizes were awarded. Mrs. Claude Pippin received high score and Mrs. Robert Dawson received low score. Mrs. Fred Page received high score for guests. Following the progres sions a salad course was served. Guests included Mrs. Norman Screws, Mrs. Russell Temple, Marion Whitlock, Ruby Dawson, Ruby Stell, Mrs. Raleigh Alford, Mrs. Claude Pippin, Miss Catrina Gill, Mrs. Eugene Privett, Mrs. Ir by Gill, Mrs. Fred Page. ANOTHER VEGETABLE In Temple’s Market on Wednes day was a fine head of broccoli grown by Mr. Chadwick who moved here from Raleigh. And looking at it were several Zebu lonians who were not quite sure whether it was a new kind of vegetable or a collard that had lived too fast. PROGRAM SATURDAY NIGHT; CERTIFICATES BE PRESENTED The class in steel guitar of Haw aiian Teachers, Ltd., taught by Kathleen Lee, finishes the thirty week’s course Saturday, June 25th. Saturday night at eight the par ents and friends are invited to a short program to be given by the students at the Womans Club. Those who have completed the course are J. H. Batts, Jr., Edward Price, John Bradshaw, Eloise Tip pett, Gay Homer, Elizabeth Pate, Wade David, Julian Mitchell, Ken neth Frazier, Claudius Watson and Mahlon Honeycutt. Commencement exercises were held with each division of the school represented and directed by the workers in charge. During a social hour after the program refreshments were served to all attending. NEW MAGAZINE FOR SOUTH A new publication, The Southern Garden, has been started in Ra leigh, the first issue being for Ap ril of this year. The June copy shows an attractive cover in colors and contains informative articles on the growth of dahlias in this section; on perennials that are not annuals; rock gardens; mal nutrition in plants; and timely advice and suggestions. There are also editorials, household helps and a house-plan with other features. The price is one dollar a year for the twelve issues, and is is safe to say that subscribers will get their money's worth, as the magazine will be able to deal directly with problems that concern gardeners in this section.
