D. D. Chamblee, insurance and real estate dealer wrote a gentle man living elsewhere asking what he would take for some property he owns in Zebulon. Below we give his reply: Dear Durward: Replying to your letter of yes terday in regard to the house. I doubt if I would be justi fied in selling this place for twice its worth. If I got the cash it would go like the proverbial snow ball in the hot place. Then I’d be tagging Uncle Sam by the coat tail to know if he had room for another pension er. If I invested in other property it would be with fear and trembling and both are bad on a jittery ner vous system. You have visualized the man who sat with tenacious caution, crying- Do not rock the boat? Call at my house and behold the man, for the old gray mare is not what she uster was according to all signs and wonders. I know you will say one should be serious in business but I have al ready turned too many hairs gray and furrowed too many wrinkles being serious and besides the Drs. say we should look on the sunny side of life. If I should sell your prospect for double the worth of the place I should think he was a phule and my conscience would be playing me hide and seek when I most needed sleep. If I should sell for less than value my wife and children would shake their heads, speak in low tones, glance at me and I would have to take it without benefit of clergy. Now if you wanted to discuss fishing, politics, picnics or chess why I would turn in my tracks, step over my pole backwards, make a cross mark and spit in it and drag up a cheer for a real conver sation. In childhood we had visions of things and power and place but as the sunset of life begins to cast its radiant glow along our path-way the sound of the wind in the trees, the howl of the dog at bell time, the wail of the creek-hawk in the high blue, the fragrance of many flowers, the floating fleecy clowds, the slumber inducing arguments of the katydids, the rain on the roof in the quiet hours, the song of the birds and the silent flow of the deep waters give ear to the still small voice and we come to realize tangible things are not the full measure of life nor time the full measure of the soul. Children cry to attract attention but people often talk to divert at tention but I venture you are still ' wondering what is my price on that LON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, JULY 22,1838.
