THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CA RQLINA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30,1938 Peace Parley Thursday Great Britain, France, .Germany and Italy met Thursday in Mun ich for a conference as to peace plans. Hitler has declared his aversion to war, which some be lieve to be caused by discretion and not desire for peace. But the mil lions who are hoping the confer ence may arrive at a solution of the Sudeten problem are probably less interested in the reason than the result. The world waits for reports of the conference —and much of it prepares to fight. Six thousand more will die as the re 'Ult of burns and scalds. When an airplane crashes and a dozen people burn to death, the news makes international head lines and the world is horrified. Yet the public at large is callous to the fact t hat our annual total of deaths from fires is greater than the toll would be from 600 air planes carrying to flaming doom 12 persons each. Practically every one of those thousands of fire deaths could be easily pn vented. Due to the care lessness of adults, children are among the principal sufferers. Un protected stoves, matches left about, steam and hot water —these are major causes of death and suf fering among the very young. Death takes no holiday when those things which may cause fires and scalds are within reach of a child’s untaught, exploring fingers. Equally dangerous, particularly in the case of adults, is the prac tice of starting stoves and furn aces with kerosene, gasoline or | inflammable liquids. You may get away with it a thousand times. But the thousandth and first time may mean a job for the undertaker—with you and possi bly others as the objects of inter est. Next time you read of a spec tacular disaster, reflect that some thing equally horrible can occur in your home. Think of this before you stir up a balky fire with kero sene. Think of it again when chil dren are about. It is easy to pre vent a fire —but it is impossible to ever make up for the conse quences of a fire that takes a life.
