Mr. and Mrs. James Allen of Wilson spent the week-end with the latter’s parents ,the J. G. Kemps. Mrs. Jesse Freeman and little daughter of Wake Forest visited the former’s parents, the B. C. Bunns, during the weekend. Miss Catrina Gill, now teaching at Warrenton, was home for the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Victoria Gill. Mrs. W. A. Smith, for years as sistant pastor of the First Bap tist church Raleigh, attended serv ices here Sunday. Mrs. Smith is visiting her son in Wendell. J. W. Gill and little son, Bobby, visited Mrs. Gill at the Sanatorium Sunday. Mrs. Gill has made marked improvement recently and ex pects to be home by Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. A. R. House spent Sunday with Mrs. J. L. Cobb near Pine tops. Saturday Nov. 18* i is Dad’s day at Duke Univerb ri A. R. House will spend the week end with his son, Ralph. The football game with State College and the Faculty Dad’s reception promise the Dads a good time. The following members of the local post of the American Legion attended the Armistice Day cele bration in Raleigh: K. P. Leonard, Willard White, A. S. Hinton and Fletcher Richards. Pastor A. A. Pippin is spending this week in Raleigh visiting his son, Hugh, and attending the ses sions of the Baptist State Conven tion. The Revs. R. H. Herring, Theo. Davis, A. D. Parrish and G. J. Griffin have attended some of the sessions. The Graham Conns have moved into the upstairs apartment of the house occupied by the L. E. Longs. F. E. Bunn left on Wednesday of this week for New York City where he will meet officials of Charlotte to sign and deliver City of Charlotte bonds. While in New York Mr. Dunn will also sign and deliver Cumberland County bonds. He will return the latter part of this week. Dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Oris E. Horton last Friday were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank McKever, Mr. George Minningham and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner of New York City. Mrs. Turner is a sister of Mrs. Horton. Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Wells and son Albert of Wendell, Mr. and Mrs. Oris Horton and daughter, Jean nette, visited Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Bullock of Roxboro last week-end. Mrs. Norine Hockaday visited her sister, Lydia Frances Pearce at the Oxford Orphanage last Fri day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bradley, Jr., are coming from Raleigh each night of Pastor Bradley’s absence at Conference this week to be with Mrs. Bradley. Mrs. C. B. Hodge, in the Record office last week, said that her mother, Mrs. G. W. Ray, has had a long and serious illness; but is now slowly improving. Geo. E. Lovell for a number of years connected with the Pythian Home, Clayton, but now living near New Bern, was a business caller at the Record office Mon day. Rev. Oscar Creech of Ahoskie was a caller at the Record office Monday on his way to the Bap tist State Convention in Raleigh. Friends here will be interested to learn of the birth of a daughter, Kiva Jean, to Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Knott of Wendell. Mrs. Knott form erly was Miss Mary Horton Strick land. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tippett of R 3 announce the birth of a son, Joseph Wayne, at their home on Monday, November 14. Mrs. C. H. Bostin of Raleigh visited her sister, Mrs. Joe Tip pett, on Thursday of this week. “SWINGAROOS” Sexton Johnston and two of his friends as “The Swingaroos” are broadcasting from Wilson at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at 3:30 on Saturdays. Sexton is well known here as a singer and his radio friends will be glad to tune in for his program. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION N. L. Horton’s 60th birthday was honored last Sunday by a' gathering at his home and a boun tiful dinner served picnic style in the yard. Present were the five daughters: Mrs. Elsie Girard, Rocky Mount; Mrs. Margery Lee Gossett, Gastonia; Mrs. Hazel Strickland, Wendell; Mrs. Neva Strickand, Baliey; Mrs. Chloe Adams, Sims. Also present were Mr. Horton’s sisters: Mrs. Alonza Chamblee, j Zebulon; Mrs. L. E. Johnson, Dur ham; his brothers: Henry, Earl, and Clifton Horton, all of Zebu- Ion; a sister-in-law, Mrs. S. A. Horton. The above were accom-i panied by their families. Friends | came with relatives to enjoy the day, which was a reunion as well as a celebration. MRS. DOUGLAS PACE HONORED AT SHOWER On last Wednesday evening from 7 o’clock until 10:00 Miss Ma toka Pace entertained at her home, honoring Mrs. Douglas Pace, re cent bride, with a miscellaneous shower. The home was attractively decorated with baskets of white chrysanthemums. The color scheme of green and white being used throughout the evening. As the guests entered they were invited to register in the bride’s book, presided over by Emma Jean Pace. Games, contests and a most in teresting local amateur program were thoroughly enjoyed by every one present. Following this, refreshments were served consisting of green jello with whipped cream, white THE ZEBULON RECORD iced cake with green decorations. Favors were small (lighted) white candles in green candle holders. After refreshments the guests were much amazed at hearing i from afar, the voice of “Aunt Louie” the colored washerwoman approaching, singing negro spirit uals. Upon her arrival, she present ed the honoree with a large laun dry basket full and overflowing with lovely gifts. About 40 guests were present. APPLICANTS WARNED AGAINST FRAUD Durham, Nov. 15.—Dr. Frank T. de Vyver, supervisor of merit ex aminations for the North Carolina Unemployment Compensation Com mission, issued the following state ment today: ‘‘My attention has been called to advertisements by correspondence schools and coaching schools who purport to have “inside informa tion” on examinations to be given in January. I wish to make it emphatically clear that no individual and no group has been furnished informa tion not supplied to all applicants. No sample questions on the exam inations are available. The fact is that the examinations have not yet been prepared. The research material filed in the North Carolina libraries consists of copies of the laws and bulletins with which applicants may be ex pected to be familiar. This material does not include copies of examina tions or sample questions. This statement is issued as a warning. The examinations will not be prepared until December.
