FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1938 SCHOOL CLOSED Wakelon Schools closed on Wednesday for the Christmas holidays, teachers going to their homes, or to visit during the vacation. The dormitory will be closed also until time for the school to re-open. On January 2 work will be re sumed. Wakelon Pupils Gives Program Pupils of the sixth and seventh grades at Wakelon with members of the school glee club presented j the annual Christmas music pro gram on last Sunday afternoon. ‘ Why the Chimes Rang” was told in song and action to the usual large audience. M iss Barrett, teacher of public I school music, directed and accomp anied the singers. The children seemed to feel the parts they play ed and the feeling carried across to those who watched and listened, bearing a message of the value of sacrificial giving. Chief speak ng pails were taken by Bety I>ee Win stead, Frederick Page, and Wilbur Conn. Wendell Has Xmas Pageant A good many persons from Zeb ulon enjoyed the Christmas page ant given in the school auditorium at Wendell on Sunday night. An annual affair, the program varies, this year’s presentation being a cantata directed by Mr. McDuffie of the school faculty. Singers in vestments of red and white gave appropriate numbers, while the traditional manger scene with Mary, angels, shepherds, and wise men, added to the impressiveness of the occasion. MRS. G. W. MAY After a long period of declining health Mrs. G. W. May died at her home here on Monday and was bu ried Tuesday afternoon in the Zeb ulon cemetery following services at the home conducted by Rev. R. H. Herring and Rev. Theo. B. Dav is. The deceased, formerly Isa bella Hayes, was a native of Gran ville County, born in September, 1802. She was married to G. W. May on December 29, 1882, almost 55 years ago. She was baptized in the fellowship of Poplar Springs Baptist church by Rev. G. W. Duke but at the time of her death was a member of the Wakefield church. Surviving besides the husband are: two sons, John May of Zebulon and Eulas May of Raleigh; a daughter, Miss Oza May, who faithfully cared for her mother during her invalidism. Two sons, Leonard and Franklin, are dead. Also surviving is a brother, Jim Hayes, of Franklin County. WRIGHT BROS. PAID HONORS On the 25th anniversary of the first airplane flight made by Wil bur and Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, a crowd gathered on the spot for memorial ceremonies. The memorial sets atop Kill Devil Hill. During the celebration a plane circled the great pylon, giving an aerial salute. About 200 naval and coast guard planes were on hand to participate in the ceremonies, but dense fog held them on the ground. If you attend the Wakelon Theatre Thursday and Friday nights you will see an aerial show that far outstripped the Kitty Hawk 'elebration in thrills. It is a cavalcade of avi ation in technicolor, from the Wtlght Brothers immortal flight to the trim auper-linera of today. Commandments For Christmas I Thou shalt not leave ‘ Christ” out of Christmas, making it Xmas, for this is the sign that thou art lazy-minded tnd spiritually listless. To most minds “X” stands not for Christ, but for the algebraic un known. II Thou shalt not value thy gifts by their cost, for verHy many shall signify love that more blessed and beautiful than silver and gold. 111 Thou shalt give thyself with thy gifts. Thy love, thy personal ity, and thy service shall increase the value of thy gifts a hundred fold and he that receiveth it shall treasure it forever. IV' Thou shalt not let Santa Claus take the place of Christ. In many homes Santa Claus supersedes the Christ child and Christmas becomes a fairy tab* rather than a sublime reality in the spiritual realm. V Thou shalt not burden thy servant. The shop girls, the mail carrier, and the merchant should have thy consideration. VI Thou shalt not neglect thy church. Its Chrristmas services are planned to help spiritualize the Christmas season for thee, thy child, and thy household. VII Thou shalt not neglect the needy. Let thy bountiful blessings be shared with the many who will go hungry and shiver unless thou art generous in their time of want. VIII Thou shalt be as a little child. Christmas is the day of the Christ child; art thou ready to enter the kingdom of heaven? in preparing our souls. IX Thou shalt prepare thy soul for Christmas. For verily most of us spend much time and money geting gifts ready, but few seconds Selected by Mrs. T. Y. Puryear CHEAP CHRISTMAS TRAVEL RATES Norfolk, Va.. December 12, 1938 MR.
