I shall be glad to give you some of that.” After an in stant of surprise and thought he replied: “I’ll just go on to Raleigh. I wanted to get a cup of coffee.” Through pity for the unemployed I handed him some change. Thanking me he went out. A woman is said to have what is called in tuition, a thing men are not supposed to possess to any great degree. So after the man left, the associate editor said: “You certainly can let folks put things over on you.’’ My reply, “Yes, you did that to me more than 30 years ago.” After thinking the matter over I went up the street to the City Case and - /scribed the man to the proprietor and inquired if such a one had been there lately. He had, and bought coffee and two egg sandwiches, offering a $5.00 bill to deduct payment. Only last week a man came in and asked for work to earn passage to a town 100 miles distant. All this reminds me that Uncle Sam is grad- j ually ceasing to play Santa Claus to the needy, j And as government help is withdrawn there will j be turned loose on the public a mob of mendi-| cants. For years they have been in training in • Uncle Sam’s charity school. Daily, weekly and monthy food and clothing and even money has been handed out to the millions without a regu lar job or visible means of support. In many cases as we know from observation locally, many of those helped were able-bodied people 4 Ilf fort to help themselves so long 4 I live off relief. And, our roing to need to begin again this mission among those in need of png. cases mentioned, we may expect if real and hypocritical calls for ) pleas for help should be passed necessary to make careful investi help is extended. These parasites ten unworthily and hypocritically es agencies will turn to begging, lashamed. We may expect many real and impostors. oOo TRADE-AT-HOME ISSUE o r if all Europe joins in battle and jod this year, America expects to ! isual calm and prosperous way. Zebulon is a small part of these L we hope to have a part in such rosperity as comes to our country o, the Zebulon Record is going to bility and influence in doing and things that we believe will mean community’s happiness and pros |nd our next issue of the Record | rade-in-Zebulon booster. Brief ne leading business concerns will [s pages, giving their history and !ing facts. We hope our readers will carefully read these sketches. Then, dur ing 1940 consider Zebulon as the best place to buy your home and farm needs. No citizen is worthy, and it seems to us, would care to live in, or do business in a town in which he could not afford to trade. The biggest knocker in the community is the fellow who gets his living out of a community and then carries his money to some other town and spends it. Live at home, trade at home, and thus boost your own com munity. Keep trading at home and watch for our trade-at-home issue next week. We have se cured Mr. Walter L. Hamilton of Rocky Mount, a specialist is getting out booster and trade-at home issues, to assist us in getting up the ma terial for next week’s Zebulon Record. We hope our business men will cooperate with him and us in making the next Record one that will be worthy of our aim and such that it will ap peal to our trade people in cooperating to make 1940 Zebulon business the best in its his tory.
