Farley, National Chair man. Philadelphia is said to have ' been Chicago’s nearest competitor,' offering $200,000 for the conven tion, while the winning city offered $150,000. Houston, Texas, also of •fered $200,000 for the gathering. Geographical and political reasons had much weight in making the de cision for Chicago.
