W. Liles Zebulon ABC’s of Canned Food Labels All homemakers know that canned food comes in three grades, j A, B, and C, but many do not know precisely what these grades mean. With the rise in food prices it is well to compare the differences in quality among the, grades. The less expensive grades j do not necessarily mean less nu tritous food. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture,! the meanings of these grades label ed either as A. B, and C, or Fancy, Choice, and Standard, are as fol lows: Grade A (Fancy) —This grade includes the best food on the mar ket as to size, color, degree of ma turity, and freedom from blem ishes. The fruits, always meaty, highly colored and ripe, are packed in sirup that is extra heavy (very sweet), heavy (sweet), light (somewhat sweet), and in sweet ened water. The vegetables are al ways very tender and juicy. Grade B ( Choice) —The only difference between A and B grades is that the B products are not so well selected, and are packed in sirup or water. Nevertheless, Grade B canned food is of ex cellent quality. Grade C (Standard) —Grade C canned food is of good quality, but differs from the other two grades in that the products are not so uniform in color, size, or degree of maturity. The fruit, as in Grade B, is packed in either sirup or water. The vegetables are less tender, but in some cases have more food value because they are more fully mature than the pro ducts in the higher grades. Small Glenda Eddins came Tuesday from Raleigh to visit in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C B. Eddins.
