department OF POLITICS
Wake Forest College has sent its graduates into every walk of
life. More than once even outside the student body things have hap
pened in connection with the college affairs that showed that Trus*
tees and Faculty were not adverse to playing a little political game
of their own. Just now such a program seems about to be brought
to its completion successfully in getting the Baptist State Convention
to rubber stamp a somewhat premature action of the Board of Trus
tees. We believe the representatives from the churches should, af
ter due deliberation in Convention assembled, pass on such matters
before action by any lower authority. Perhaps the Trustees were
right as to the thing done, but we question the wisdom of how it was
done.
THAT EDUCATIONAL AMENDMENT
What seemed one time to be certain defeat to the proposed
Constitutional Amendment prepared by a coalition of educators and
politicians was turned to a victory by a few words from Governor
Broughton. And now, the voters can wait and see how little differ
ent the whole Board of Education will be a few years hence from
what it will be immediately after the Governor’s setup.
THE UNITED WAR FUND
No doubt there are many people who yet think they will be
able to escape suffering and sacrifice during this war. It may get
the other fellow into paying the bills or surrendering his life, but not
them. In the present United War Fund campaign, probably many
more people refused or just did not give anything to the campaign
than those who did. If a person ever had an opportunity to do some
thing for his country and for his fellow man, this campaign afforded
him the opportunity to do it. Even our self-respect would not let us
deny ourselves the privilege of a greatly needed and most unselfish
service to human beings who are suffering and dying for the ideals
and freedom that the Allies are fighting and dying for. It is not too
late to give. Send in your contribution to Chairman Brown.

SCRAP CAMPAIGN STILL ON
Don't forget scrap will be needed till the Axis are whipped.
And when we say whipped, we mean whipped to a frazzle, so they
can never repeat the awful carnage now being done by them. So,
everywhere you go, look out for scrap. Pick it up, even a nail or
old tin can, and save it. The war will last another year if not longer
and millions of pounds of scrap will be needed. Even if each indi
vidual picks up a pound each a month it means that in a year the
people of the United States will furnish one billion and fifty six
million pounds. Every little bid helps, and if it was “ver needed, it
is now.
THE JOKE’S ON UNCLE SAM
We have referred before to the tremendous waste of time, post
age and paper in the several special setups supposed to help win the
war. This amount extends into the millions, said Senator Byrd.
Perhaps all this is taken seriously by most of the people so occupied.
But that does not prevent such inexcusable waste.
But there is another phase of the same matter that would be
laughable if it was not so foolish. No one has ever taken a comic
strip seriously. They arc prepared to entertain the wise and foolish
As such institutions, they are established beyond redemption for oth
er purposes. Yet, supposedly practical men have taken •LiT Abner,
Popeve and other comic characters and put them into strips to help
build up morale. And we have read them with the usual interest,
seeing in them nothing more than a joke. Yes. we doubt not but
that the biggest joke of the win the war effort is found here. The
joke is all on the government, and the people must pay the bill
