ZEBULON GOES OVER THE TOP IN BOND DRIVE THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume 22. No. 11 This, That & The Other By Mrs. Thec B. Davis f Last week I said that with the sons taking over the shop and paper I would not be associate editor any more. And on the same page in another column a son said I would be. They may be right: it remains to be seen. If for some reason the meal you are preparing is late, go ahead and set the table anyway. Make it look nicer than usual, if you can. Then, when the menfolk come in, tired and hungry, they'll see the table and think dinner or supper is ready. They’ll sit down calmly to talk or read and the chances are you’ll have to call them twice to come and eat. If you fail to set the table, it looks as if you forgot all about the cooking and eating. The family will feel half-way injured or ne glected and will watch your every movement, getting hungrier all the time. Nobody told me this. I learned it since I have been working away from the home and pass it on free, for nothing, as a grandson says. The family joins me in thank ing Mr. Bennett Pearce for a sweet potato big enough to make all the pudding we could eat —or could spare sugar for. And no winter dpssert ever made beats one of grated sweet potatoes, all goo-ey and sticky, maybe with raisins in; and, in the dear dead days beyond recall we could also put in some fresh cocoanut. But cocoanuts these days are many times as high as the trees they grew on; and most of them are little and discouraged looking. Monday afternoon Staley Den ton came to me with a sheet of copy he was setting. The line that puzzled him said “An idle brain is the devil’s worship.” —See TT&O, Page 2 Wake Grads Meet In Baptist Church A meeting of Wake Forest Col lege graduates and supporters was held at the Baptist Church Mon day night at 7:30 with Pastor G. J. Griffin in charge. Guests speakers were Chairman Jackson of the Wake Forest En largement Campaign and Coach Jim Weaver, who has just re ceived his discharge from the Navy. Chairman Jackson told the group what is planned in the En largement Program. New build ings will include dormitories for both girls and boys, an adequate hospital, and eventually a new auditorium-gymnasium. Wake Forest’s president Dr. Thurman Kitchin, will speak in the Baptist Church here sometime in January. Present were Rev. R. H. Her ring, T. B. Davis, Sr., Dr. L. M. Massey, C. V. Whitley, Major Ferd L. Davis, and Mrs. Ferd L. Davis, who was the first coed ever to matriculate at Wake Forest College. Zebulon, N. Plans for a hike were made, but no definite date was set be cause too many scouts were ab sent. No other business came before the meeting. After the opening ceremony and business was finished, games were played, including let-’er buck, tractor, skunk tag, and others. Scouts present were: Flying Eagle Patrol members Bob Vance Brown, K. D. Lloyd, and Robert Kitchens; Pine Tree Patrol mem bers Billy Brantley, Leonard Sewell, and Jack Terry. Rotarian Barrie Davis was a visitor. Wakelon Begins Basketball Work Wakelon’s basketball team has begun practice for their season’s schedule this week. Coach Lowry has them hard at work preparing for their first game to oe played about December 18 with Franklin ton. Wakelon is a member of the Wake County Conference. Other members are Wendell, Knightdale, Rolesville, Milbrook and Wake Forest. Last year was the first season for several years for the Bulldogs, and they suffered from lack of experience. However, they man- See WAKELON, Page 2 The next Zebulon town hall meeting will be held at 7:30 on Friday night, November 30, in the Carolina Power and Light Com pany office. At the meeting aerial motion pictures of Zebulon will be shown. This meeting originally was scheduled for November 23, but, because this is the day after Thanksgiving, it was decided to postpone the affair one week. Vance Brown, chairman of the town committee on real estate in vestigation, will make his report on availability of lots for home builders in Zebulon, and Oliver Glover will report on the amount of building supplies he has located for prospective builders. It is believed that Mr. Glover’s committee has accomplished something in the way of locating lumber, as there has been a slight increase in Zebulon con struction during the past week. Following the reports of the various committees there will be another open forum type discus sion, with the tentative subject being paving of local streets and roads, including arterial routes to Zebulon from nearby farm com munities. At the conclusion of the pro gram Rev. George Griffin will show motion pictures of Zebulon made from an airplane flown by Barrie Davis, with Ted Davis as cameraman. There will be ap proximately 100 feet of this film shown. Every member of the communi ty is invited and urged to attend. The deadline for copy (news or ads) for the Zeb ulon Record is Tuesday Noon. Please have it in on time. George J. Griffin Has Club Program President George Griffin had the Rotary program at their meet ing at Tipplon last Friday night, and brought recorded messages from Rotary International Pres ident Bob Warren of England, and Secretary Phil Lovejoy. An other recorded talk by the found er of Rotary, Paul Harris, was also heard. This program served as the in duction ceremony for Barrie Davis, who joined the club sev eral weeks ago. Charlie Vale was the only mem" ber absent. It is hoped that he has made up his attendance by now. Cage Players Are Needed for Team Anyone interested in playing a bit of basketball just for the fun of playing is. urged to contact Ferd or Barrie Davis at the Record office. Several years ago Zebulon had an All-Star aggregation under Worth Hinton’s leadership which ended the season with a very good record. Coach Lowry is eager for the Wakelon Bulldogs to play a warm up game, and says he will be willing to play a Zebulon team as soon as it is formed. Anyone with or without experi ence from Zebulon, Middlesex, Wakefield, Corinth-Holder, and Rosenburg are asked to play. Over $60,000 Worthofßonds Sold by Auction Zebulon’s last extended bond drive went over the top last Sat urday afternoon when Dr. L. M. Massey. Ted Davis, Raleigh Al ford, and Fred Dixon, serving as auctioneers, sold people of this community bonds worth $60,950. Frank Massey also assisted in the sale. The remarkable amount of bonds sold surprised even the sale’s promoters, especially in view of the fact that a neighbor ing community was able to sell only about SIO,OOO worth of bonds at a similar auction. Monday night Dr. Massey, local chairman, said that Zebulon’s entire quota, including the $50,00b “E” bond allotment, had been reached—but that he hoped no one would quit buying on that account. The largest bond sold, a piece of paper worth SIO,OOO, was bought by J. K. Barrow, Sr. He received a SIO.OO cash prize. A $25 war bond, was won by an anonymous person, who bought $4750 of bonds through Vance Brown as agent. A Jap war bond was won by Miss Nell Stallings on a pur chase of $2500 in bonds; her sister, Evelyn Stallings, also bought $2500 worth of bonds. The Camp Butner band was on hand for the occasion, and fur nished music throughout, follow ing a parade on Arendall Avenue. Attending from Raleigh in addi tion to Chairman Dixon were Mrs. A. C. Bulla, general woman’s chairman for bond sales, and Mrs. E. M. Powell. Mrs. I. D. Gill, local woman’s chairman, handied the paperwork at the bond auction.
