Meeting of Directors The Board of Directors of the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce at their first meeting last night elected Bob Sawyer, presiding officer cl the organization during its for mative stage, as vice president. The directors also decided to take action incorporating the group this week, in compliance with a directive vote of the membership earlier last night. President C. V. Whitley is in charge of incorporation procedure. Barrie Davis, temporary secretary-treasurer of the Cham ber of Commerce during the period in which Sawyer headed the group, was directed to continue in that capacity until a permanent seccessor could be obtained, or an executive secretary appointed by the membership. The new office recently completed in the Davis Building will be used as headquarters for the Chamber of Commerce, and a sign will be placed on Arendell Avenue indicating that the office is in the newspaper building. Further action was deferred by the group until a report can be made on progress of the incorporation move. Local Boys and Girls Offered Free Instruction Course in Life Saving A course of instruction in water safety and lifesaving will be inau gurated by the Wake County Chapter of the Red Cross at Lake Mirl starting next Monday, June 30, it has been announced by Louis Gray, chairman of the chap ter’s Water Safety Committee. Registration for the course will be held at Zelfulon Drug Co. Satur day at 9:30 to 12:30 a. m. and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a. m. Boys and girls from the ages of 12 to 16 are eligible for instruc tion in the Junior lifesaving class, starting at 7 p. m. Monday. Seni ors must be at least 17 years of age and their classes will begin at Deep Wei! Nears Two Hundred Foot Mark Work on the wells which are to provide water for Zebulon was held up Thursday because of the rains, but Heater Well Company had drilled to a depth of about 130 feet Wednesday evening. The water supply expected from this well is estimated at 40 to 50 gal lons per minute, according to com pany officials. The first hole drilled had to be abandoned at about 100 feet be cause the pipe crimped while be- 1 ing driven into the ground. It; would have been possible to drill ! past, but the cost would have been greater than drilling another hole. Drilling is expected to continue to 200 feet, unless an additional supply of water is reached above that depth. Already water has been found at several levels, and according to the drillers, the rock formation is such that a greater (Continued on Page -8) Town Awards Sewerage Contract To F. D. Cline Construction Firm F. D. Cline Construction Com pany was named the successful bidder for the contract to build the three sewer extensions for Zebulon. The contract was awarded at a special meeting of The Town Board held June 16 to receive the bids. The Cline com pany bid $5,500. According to the contract, the work is to be completed within 60 days of the date of contract. This means that all three extensions must be finished by August 16. The first of the extensions, 7 p. m. daily. The course will continue for two weeks, daily except Sunday. ;At the end of the classes, success ful students will be presented with a certificate for their work. There is no charge for the course. In announcing the classes in lifesaving at Lake Mirl, Chairman j Gray pointed out that approxi mately 7,000 people meet death each summer through accidental drowning and that many of these deaths .could be avoided if the people in general were better trained in water safety and life saving methods. An excellent example of the need of water safety was found recently at Like Mirl when Jim- Jimmy Greene, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hilliard Greene, sav ed a non-swimmer from possible drowning when she fell off a float. Boy Scouts who successfully ! pass the examinations at the end of the course will be eligible for both the Lifesaving and the Swim ' ming Merit Badges. Local Child Is Bitten By Dog Thought Rabid Brendolyn Bunn, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bunn, was bitten last week by a dog sus pected of being mad. Before the dog could be placed under obser vation, it was killed by an auto mobile. The county health officer re ; ported that actions of the dog in dicated hydrophobia, but that the disease had not developed enough ; for a positive check. V. Whitley Elected President Os Local Chamber of Commerce Thirty-One Members Os Civic Organization Attend First Meeting C. V. Whitley, president of Whitley Furniture Company and the Zebulon Supply Company,; was elected last night as the first president of the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s first regular meeting, held at the local Masonic Hall in the Privett Building. Thirty-one members of the civic 1 organization attended the meet-j ing, at which members of the board of directors were elected and the constitution and by-laws adopted, the latter action coming after a prolonged discussion of the merits of both the group and its constitution. The meeting, which was presided over by Bob Sawyer until Whit ley's election, was also for the pur- j pose ot electing six members of the board of directors, who were j j selected by the membership from [ the twelve high men of the mail j primary conducted earlier this i week. Elected for three-year terms on the board were Mayor R. H. Brid gers, and Bob Sawyer, who receiv- j ed first and second high votes, re- J spectively in the balloting. Pat Farmer and Ferd Davis, who tied 1 for third place in the voting last night, were elected for two-year j terms, and Ralph Talton and How- ! ard Beck were elected for a one- i year term. One Other Nominee No contest for the presidency was apparent after Whitley’s name j was placed in nomination by Ralph Talton and seconded by Vance i j Brown, until Whitley nominated Avon Privett. The former mayor | asked that his nomination be with- j | drawn, explaining that he would j ibe busy throughout the tobacco | | season, and adding that he had j only recently returned from hos- j j pitalization, but Presiding Officer J | Sawyer ruled that both names be j considered on the secret ballot. Howard Beck and Dr. L. M. 1 Massey tied for the sixth place on the board of directors in the bal- | loting, and Beck won the place when the election was decided by j lot, as prescribed by the constitu- ; tion of the commerce group. Thir teen names were printed on the official ballot, including that of President Whitley, who led in the mail primary: C. V. Whitley. R. H. | Bridgers, Ferd L. Whitley, who recently attended the Rotary International meeting i in San Francisco as a delegate, is an executive of three local corpor- j ations (Zebulon Supply Company,!, Whitley Furniture Company, and | American Plumbing & Electrical Supply Company, a new wholesale plumbing supply company located in the old Finch Building to Massey Lumber Company) in ad dition to being the founder of the Zebulon Mutual Burial Association. County Red Cross Renders Aid To Five Local Families in May Assistance of some kind was given by the Wake County Chap ter of Red Cross to five families in the Zebulon Area during the month of May according to the [ report of the Chapter. During the same period of time 426 individ uals and families, of which 273 were of Ex-Servicemen and wo men received help from the Red Cross. Eighty-three soldiers on active duty and their families, and 52 sailors and their families, sought and received aid, of some kind I heo. A tabulation of the report shows that seven families of ex-service men were given assistance in fil- I mg claims for death pensions, and that 41 ex-servicemen and women were aided in filing claims for disability pensions. Veterans numbering 15 seeking assistance in being admitted to veteyans hospitals were helped. Direct financial assistance was given to the families of three sol diers, two sailors and to 13.ex service families.
