Page Two Soil-Testing Work Increasing, Ellington Says Soil-testing work in the State Department of Agriculture in the last fiscal year increased 64 per cent over the previous year, it was announced by Dr. Ivan E. Miles, head of the Soil Testing Division, who ascribed the tre mendous increase largely to World War II veterans following modern agricultural practices and testing the soils on every field of their farms. Ed Ellington, Wakelon School agriculture teacher who is direct ing the local agricultural train ing program for veterans, said that he was exerting every effort to have his trainees cooperate with the Soil Testing Division in its work. “We are meeting with great success,” he said yesterday, when asked about the local program. “I estimate that the number of soil tests made for veterans from the Zebulon area has increased over 100 per cent in the past year.” “This is as it should be”, com mented Dr. Miles, “if a farmer is really to know the lime and ferti lizer status on his place”. Value Being Realized More and more farmers are re alizing that soil testing means dollars in their pockets, he ex plained, because of the savings when lime and fertilizer are not wasted on soils that don’t need them or on soils that are harmed by their application. For the last several years, Dr. Miles reported, soil-testing work has been increasing from 12 to 14 per cent each year over the pre ceding year. This appeared to be a normal growth due to farmers’ acceptance of the program and recognition of its importance. Last year, however, the work jumped 64 per cent above the 1945-46 fiscal year. The division tested 28,775 samples of soils, and made a total of 115,100 tests on those samples. Dr. Miles said the extra growth was brought about by more farm ers and agricultural workers re alizing the value of soil-testing, and by the cooperation given to the program by the Extension Service and the Soil Conserva tion Service. “The very great increase brought about last year, however, was due largely to the interest of the veterans through their farm training program, stimulated, hponsored and assisted by the vocational agriculture teachers”, said Dr. Miles. “In connection with this pro gram we have had the opportuni- GUARANTEED INCOMES Please let me know how much income 1 can have at 55, 60 or 65, if 1 save each week: $2 $5 $lO sls S2O $25 Name Date of Birth Addrlss FRED DIXON and Associates ATLANTIC LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY P. It has been most gratifying to see how the work has been received. We plan further visits with these farmers during the summer to study the results with the agricul tural teachers and the veterans on their own places”. Ellington then declared that he would make a report to the Record on the results of these vis its in our community. “We are anxious to make every facility of the state available to all the farmers of Zebulon,” he said, “but especially to the train ees, many of whom will base their careers in great part on what they learn during the training period. This soil testing phase will be greatly aided here by the visits of members of the testing bureau.” Lime Use Bettered “Many of our very best farmers do not actually know the lime status of their soils”, Dr. Miles continued. “In many instances we have found some of the best farmers *of the State using lime when they will absolutely not get a penny’s profit from that lime, and in many instances the re sults actually will be detrimental because of the over-liming effects. Os course, this should not be ov er-emphasized because, as a whole, we use only a small frac tion of the amount of lime that should be used in this State. “We are wasting tremendous amounts of money by applying expensive and badly-needed fer tilizer to extremely acid soils, where the plants absolutely can not get it because of the extreme ly acid condition. The story so very frequently brought out in the analyses is that the farmer is using a fertilizer that is very high in one constituent when his soil actually has ample quantities of this one and is seriously short on Elite Beauty Salon Mrs. Frank Kemp, Owner Miss Ruth Strickland, Manager Mrs. Donna Ray and Miss Susan Stallings, Operators. With the extreme need of food, to the extent of starvation prevailing over large parts of the world, it should behoove us to use what lime and fertilizer we have to the greatest efficiency. It seems a shame for us to waste these materials when much of the guesswork could be taken out by proper sampling of the soils and having them analyzed.” Mrs. William Y.
