Page Two Wakelon P-TA Hears Discussion of Child Delinquency Problem (Continued from Page 1) ed, do not realize the principal of cause and effect in raising boys and that the thing do do is to stimulate them; don’t leave them to nature. “There is no such thing as a delinquent boy or girl,” said Chief of Police Willie B. Hopkins, the third speaker. “There are just de linquent parents.” In his speech and his talk during the open forum Willie B. emphasized that in all his experience with children afoul the law, the trouble could be trac ed to parent’s carelessness with their children. “Parents,” he said, “can not send their children off to the movies to get them out. of the way without undesirable results. The small number of parents pres ent at the Parent-Teacher meet ings indicated that parents them selves do not realize the responsi bility of having children.” He concluded by observing that many parents mean to leave it all up to school authorities to raise their children. In the devotional service, Rev. Paul Carruth of th Zebulon Methodist Church brought out the fact that Jesus’ parents had to take time to see about Him on occasion. Principal Fred Smith of Wake lon School spoke first in the open forum period. H e told of the appalling sex consciousness of even very young children at Wake lon, the worst problem of the sort he has encountered in any school. He and his teachers are handicap ped, he continued, by their reluc tance to approach parents in in dividual cases, since parents in such cases could not accept the facts that their own children can be guilty of these things. He spoke of the evils of the theatres, telling how boys and girls take advantage of the theatres to carry on promiscuous ly. He wondered if parents knew about this. Page’s Store Co., Phone 2861, Zebulon. to Mr. Smith, saying that she for i dhe would always welcome an op portunity to confer with the school i people in such matters regarding ! her children. She substantiated the statement regarding the de plorable conduct in the motion picture theatres. Mr. Carruth rose to say that he t hoped that a clinic or conference might be arranged by local peo ple without outside trained con sultants. This could be sponsored by the churches or the P.-T. A. The spirited discussion which took place indicated a sincere de- j sire on the part of members of the P.-T. A. to remedy the touchy situation in the community. The increasing interest in the meet ings contrasts with the meager attendance and lack of participa tion in past years. Mrs. Jack Mitchell, president of the group, stated that the March ! meeting of the group would be ! a study course on the subject of parent-children relationship led by trained speakers of that field. The meeting for March will in clude both an afternoon and eve ning session. The attendance awards were won by Mrs. Page’s primary grade, Mrs. Martin’s grammar grade, and Mrs. Frank’s class in the high school. Mrs. A. S. Draughan, chairman of the finance committee, reported that $350.00 had been turned over to Mr. Smith to purchase labora F0r’48... start off on the RIGHT foot...with \ It’s a new driving thrill to glide away from the curb — rn ~4 without shifting gears, without pushing a clutch.
