Friday, February 20, 1948 Letters to the Editor The following letter was sent by the writer to a Raleigh daily early this week at the same time it was mailed to the Record. As we go to press, it has not yet appeared in that newspaper. Dear Editor: While the Honorable Govern or of the Great State of North Carolina boasts of the financial condition stating that we have many millions of dollars in the Treasury, hundreds of families in Wake County, Little River Township, Hopkins Chapel Com munity, were marooned for more than two days and nights due to inadequate roads and necessary equipment. I live in the Hopkins Chapel Community on the Chapel Road with several hundred other fam ilies. This road begins approxi mately two miles north of Zebu lon, North Carolina, leading from Highway 264 for a distance of approximately six miles to the Franklin County line. This being a dirt road, is none too good j even in the best of weather. The people of this Community have petitioned the County Commis sioners and the Highway Depart ment for an all weather road, but to no avail. The recent snow which caus ed these families to be marooned, could have, in the opinion of the people in this Community, been removed to the extent that some traffic would have been possible. There were cases of serious ill ness as well as accidents in this Community during these two days and nights and' there could not be any medical service ren dered. For example: One man fell on Sunday night and broke several ribs and injured his hip, but it was Monday afternoon be fore this person could be taken to the highway and then this had to be done by a farmer with his tractor. This same farmer used both of his tractors in trying to make a path up this road in order for the various families to get to and from their homes byway of wagons, muleback and in some instances, with automobiles where chains were available. If this had not been done, there is no telling how long we would have been without any facilities to get to the highway. The people of this Community feel that while the money is be ing appropriated and spent in the sum of approximately a half mil lion dollars to provide a two lane boulevard, a distance of app^oxi WAKE L 0 N THEATRE - ZEBULON Sunday Shows: 3:15 and 9 p.m. Weekday Shows: 3:15, 7:15, and 9:00 p.m. SATURDAY, FEB. 21- SIX GUN LAW Charles Starrett Smiley Burnette SUNDAY AND MONDAY, FEB. 22-23 THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER Loretta Young Joseph Cotten Ethel Barrymore TUESDAY, FEB. 24 7_ STEP CHILD Brenda Joyce WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25 WEB OF DANGER Adele Mara Bill Kennedy THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, FEB. 26-27 MY WILD IRISH ROSE Dennis Morgan SATURDAY, FE.B 28— THE MARAUDERS William Boyd Andy Clyde SUNDAY AND MONDAY, FEB. 29-MAR. 1— TRAIL STREET, Randolph Scott Anne Jeffreys mately two miles into the City of Raleigh; certainly, money should be appropriated and spent to pro vide an all weather road for the farmers of this section. The peo ple of this Community know that 1 the approximate one-half million dollars spent on the two lane boulevard leading into Raleigh benefits no one other than peo ple who own land adjoining this road. The people of Hopkins Chapel Community pay taxes, and I dare say, some pay as much or more taxes than any of the people that live on the above mentioned two lane boulevard. The people of this Community know that there was only so much the Highway Department could do during the recent snow but we feel that if there is only so much that can be done, this so much should be distributed in order that most of the people could have some advantage of the work done. I speak only ot the Hopkins Chapel Community and the Chap el Road in this section. I feel sure that there are numerous oth er sections of the State that ex perienced the same situation as evidenced by the majority of the rural schools being closed throughout the State for an inde finite period. The Chapel Road that I speak of, even after the snow has melted, will be almost impassa ble until the sun has time to completely dry it. I would like to sa> that at this writing which is February 5, 1948, the snow has not been removed from this road other than by a bulldozer which had to be obtained from Franklin County. This bulldozer lam told, belongs to the State Highway and that inasmuch as the Franklin County road crew had covered all of their roads, they instructed the driver of this machine to go where ever he felt necessary. The driver was a Wake County boy who knew that the Chapel Road certainly needed the snow remov ed, so late Tuesday afternoon he brought the bulldozer and cleared some of the snow so the people of this Community could at least get to the highway. We heard over the radio where Mr. A. H. Graham., Chairman of the Highway Commission, stated that he had nothing but pi’aise for the highway crews. We agree with Mr. Graham, but certainly their efforts were concentrated on the highways and not on the roads that have to be traveled by the farmers of this Community. I feel that I can speak the senti- The Zebulon Record ments of several hundred families who were marooned during the recent snow. They are of the opinion. certainly something should be done regarding the con struction of an all weather road for the people of this section, as well as other sections of the State. We do not feel that the great sur plus of money that the Honorable Governor boasts of is being used properly when people are suf fering due to the lack of adequate roads for school buses and for other equipment to run on.
