S. Dear styne, head of the Poultry De partment at State College. The disease, found in all sec tions where commercial poultry production is practiced, ofien re sults in high mortality among birds in an infected group, Pro fessor Dearstyne said. While no program can be developed which would guarantee a poultryman that coccidiosis would not occur, there are certain conditions of management which will aid in keeping down this disease. Such measures primarily concern good sanitation. Since most outbreaks of acute coccidiosis occur between the ages of 6 and 12 weeks, the poultry man should give special care to sanitation during theis period, Professor Dearstyne stated. A constant circulation of air will help remove moisture from the litter. There is a great deal of differ ence, the specialist asserted, in the ability of various types of lit ters to absorb moisture. For ex ample, he said, crushed corn cobs, ground peanut hulls and peat moss absorb moisture well, while wood shavings, straw and pine needles do not absorb moisture very rapid ly. Other factors in preventing coc cidiosis, Professor Dearstyne said, are good diet, ample floor space, and any other practices which tend to build vitality in birds. Beekeeping Said to Be On Decline in State North Carolina beekeepers need to increase the number of bees per colony if they are to bring honey production up to the level desired, says W. A. Stephen, bee keeper for the State College Ex tension Service. “Maybe we have enough colon ies, but certainly we haven’t enough bees,” Mr. Stephen said. “If we sincerely look for better things in apiculture we will look towards increased colony produc tion. We know how to produce 10 times as much honey from eaeh colony as we are now producing.” The number of bee colonies in the State has declined from about 250,000 at the beginning of the century to about 173,000 today, the Extension worker stated. Not only that, he continued, but pro duction per colony is not what it should be. In 1859, the specialist said, hon ey production in North Carolina averaged 10 pounds per colony. In 1915 the average was 42 pounds, highest on record. In 1847, gener ally considered a good year, the average was only 36 pounds. This figure, Mr. Stephen said, could be increased very easily by putting more bees in each colony. J. M. Chevrolet Co. Chevrolets Oldsmobiles WARNING: 90% of all tir* trou dangerous tires now. Sheep Production Records Are Cited Sheep production in North Car olina, on the decline in recent years because of shortages of fen cing material and labor, should increase in the near future be cause of the profits which can be obtained, according to L. I. Case, in f charge of Animal Husbandry Extension at State College. There is no question about the profits to be derived from sheep growing when the animals are given proper attention, Mr. Case said. Last year growers in North Carolina received a gross income of nearly s2l per ewe after spend ing one-fourth of that amount to feed each ewe for 12 months. Good feeding is one of the es sentials for economical production of market lambs and wool,' the Extension worker declared. The DR. G. S.
