Page Eight Let’s Call an End to This Stull By Barrie S. Davis How nice it would be to be back in sunny Italy, where all I had to worry about were a few Germans who took pot-shots at me as I buzzed around European skies. Life was not complicated by an over-abundance of Leap-year las sies sending torrid notes of love my way. Once I figured that gals wouldn’t go with me because they didn’t like me; but the past few weeks have proved beyond a doubt that some few of them do or would like to, anyhow. The net result of it all is that postman has been working a little harder sorting my mail, and now I’m staying to myself because I’m scared of the fair sex. Just this week I received more letters threatening me with the dangers of infernal matrimony. In spite of the attractive offers, I have decide to take the advice of a wiser and older person, who seems to know whereof she speaks. At least I’ll take her advice for a while. She says: Dear Mr. Davis: The issue of the Zebulon Record of April 23, 1948, has recently come to my attention; although I do not usually commit my thoughts to paper, I feel a very close kin ship with you and your problem. When my children showed me your column of April 30, I knew that I must lay aside all reticence and write to you immediately. Please accept my sympathy for the embarrassment and mental anguish you have suffered; al though I am a white-haired wom an, I blush for my sex when I read those pathetic letters written by frustrated women. In my day a young woman chose a suitable companion for life and through sublety and maidenly delicacy BiSEBMiSCIDDIE SATURDAY, MAY 15— Wendell at Archer Lodge Bethany at Bunn Zebulon at Clayton Knightdale at Mitchell’s Store Robertson Chemical at Pearces SUNDAY, MAY 16- Archer Lodge at Wendell Bunn at Bethany Clayton at Zebulon Mitchell’s Store at Knightdale Pearces at Robertson Chemical Zebulon Divides Series Played with Bethany Zebulon divided its series of two baseball games with Bethany in Tri-County League play Satur day and Sunday, losing the first | in an 18-16 slugfest and taking the second by a 5-1 score. New Marathan Tires Announced by Eddins Introduction of a new Marathon line of passenger automobile tires to this trading area is announced by Sidney Eddins, Manager of the Zebulon Motor Company Service Station. “The new Marathon”, says Mr. Eddins, “provides a line that com bines excel fit mileage and trac tion at prices -veraging substan tially less than 'nose now pre vailing for most tir f! in compara ble sizes. “Included in the A sizes of Marathons now available are the 5.25; 5.50-17; 6.00-16; 6.50-15; 6.50-16; popular sizes in a range covering many of the cars that have been manufactured in the last made him aware of her feelings. I for one did not permit Mr. R to hold my hand until we had been keeping company for almost two years; during the entire period, however, he was aware of the warm regard which I had for him. Apparently you have now reach ed your middle years; since you did not marry in your youth, my advice to you is to remember your Mother— or a maiden aunt may someday need you and you and she may build a full life together. I tried to impress this upon my own sons, but I am sorry to say that I failed- All of them married modern young women; however, Georgie, my youngest, manages to spend a great deal of time with his Mother. I beg of you to think before you give encouragement to these de praved young women; I have al ways thought that my own daughters-in-law were not entire ly concerned with matters of the heart when they married my sons. If, and when, you do marry, I only pray that you will find a wife like my own fine daughter. Your well wisher, AMELIA R. There you have it. Henceforth I shall do all in my power to dis courage these she-wolves that would have me yield to their de sires. A look at my face will probably be all that is necessary. Every morning I shall take hard exercise so that I will have the strength to hold them off or failing that, to hold them tightly. Next week the Zebulon Record will use this space for lighter and gayer matters. With a word of thankr, we bid the rumor which started all this and the problem it developed a fond fare-thee-well. Net result: Barrie Davis likes girls he’s just scared to death of them! 15 years. “The original Marathon line of tires for passenger cars was in troduced in March, 1938, but its production was discontinued dur ing the war emergency. The Mar athon had attained widespread populdHty by 1942 and its return will be welcomed by thousands of motorists. “With the Spring driving season just opening up, motorists are having their cars checked over, and many of them are going to find out their present tire equip ment needs replacing before any considerable amount of driving is possible. “The new Marathon is just the tire for this purpose, and in ad dition to being handsome in ap pearance has a wide tread, pre senting a good wearing surface to the road and prolonging tread life, has the new-grip non-skid, com bining all the advantages of mul tiple long-wearing ribs with deep nonskid design,” Mr. Eddins said. The Zebulon Record Tractors May Replace Old Dobbin on Farm Can the farm tractor completely replace Old Dobbin? Maybe not, but modern power machinery can be put to much wider use than at present on North Carolina farms, says the ag ricultural engineering department at State College. And to prove its point, the department last week took to the fields in nine counties to show farmers the latest mech anical equipment used in cotton and corn production. Using a five-acre demonstra tion field in each of the counties selected, the department will uti lize tractors and other machinery in planting and cultivating row crops. The planting demonstra tions began in Richmond County April 19. Each field will be visi ted two weeks after planting for the first demonstration in mech anized cultivation. In announcing the demonstra tions, J. C. Ferguson, Extension specialist in agricultural engin eering, said North Carolina farm ers are now operating approxi mately 35,000 farm tractors, but of this number probably not more than 20 per cent are being used for planting and cultivating row crops. “Less than one tractor in every 10 is being utilized in all of its capacities, as evidenced by the GIVE HER A LOVELY /, Lane Cedar Hope Chest At advertised in SEVENTEEN and LIFE Forth* Girt Gradual*, Ch*M4o. 2231 abov*, $59.95 o( ©“.popular Lane Cedar Chests for exd g^ a<,uate * wiu have all the WHITLEY FURNITURE CO. fact that workstock is still main tained on the majority of farms now using tractor power,” Mr. Ferguson said. The demonstration in corn pro duction is being conducted in Nash County, while eight demonstra tions in cotton production are be ing held in Richmond, Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, Harnett, counties. The demonstrations will Wake, Edgecombe, and Halifax continue with the necessary culti vations, on schedule, until the crops are laid by in mid-summer.
