Page Two Fresh Air Is Needed Since poults need more ventila tion during hot weather than they do during the cooler spring season, turkey producers should make cer. tain that enough fresh air is pro vided for their young birds, advises Lee W. Herrick, Jr., Extension turkey specialist at State College. This point is particularly im portant because many of the older poults are still in brooder houses and many more June poults are be ing started this year than last, Mr. Herrick said. The “nose test” will generally rev Teal whether more fresh air is needed, the spcialist said. Whr. the air in the brooder house smells clean and fresh, there is ample ventilation; but when an odor is noticed, more ventilation is need ed. If the odor is strong, the need for fresh air is very great. Mr. Herrick sair all the space between the plate over the sudding in front of the house and the roof should be open, especially after the poults are several weeks old. As the young turkeys growolder and the weather gets warmer, more windows should be opened as in dicated by results of the ‘nose test.” After the poults are four to six weeks old, it is well to have open ings on all sides of the brooder house. Openings may be made in the back of the house by removing two boards all along thi back, putting them on cleats and hinges so they may be swung open when more air is needed. Some growers using 10 by 12 foot portable brooder houses on skids have each side on hinges so the whole side can be opened to provide a ‘fresh air” shelter when the poults become older. These are sometimes moved to the range and serve as range shelters also. Outstanding Woman Mrs. C. P.
