Page Two South's Cotton Acres Produce Better Yields The South’s cotton farmers, through better management and higher yields, have been able to reduct their cotton acreage sharp ly during the past 10 years, says, C. Brice Ratchford, in charge of farm management for the State College Extension Service. The sharpest reduction, he said, has occurred in Oklahoma, where the crop has decreased from an average of 2, 187,000 acres during 1935-39 to 1,074,000 acres in 1946. This is a 51.1 per cent reduction. Using the same base years (1935-39), there has been a 45.7 per cent decrease in Georgia and a 39. 3 per cent decrease in North has been 22.3 per cent, and in Carolina. The decrease in Texas Mississippi it has been 19..0 per cent. In North Carolina, Mr. Ratch ford pointed out, all countries have shown a reduction in cotton acreage, with some counties noting very sharp decreases. Counties showing the greatest reduction are Martin, down 81 per cent; Pitt, down 78 per cent; Beaufort, down 77 per cent; Lenoir, down 67 per cent; and Wake, down 64 per cent. Through better use of land and better cultural practices, growers have been able to increase their yields per acre. Therefore, Mr. Ratchford asserted, total produc tion of cotton has not decreased nearly so much as total acreage. Life Saying Course To Be Given At Lake Junior and Senior Life Saving Courses will be held at Lake Mirl at 7:30 each evening beginning July 26, Jack Lowder, popular in structor who conducted the course last year, announced yesterday. Both admission to the Lake and instruction are free, and the Red Cross is urging everyone in the community to take ther course. Last year a number of Scouts from Zebulbn took the week of instruction and this year are wear ing the badge on their bathing trunks. The classes, however, are not limited to boys, and Jack Low der is hopeful of a large class. WAKEFIELD NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Hubert L. You may look out, you are going to hear from me before long. As soon as I can find a fishing worm tree with worms, I’ll be on my way. They don’t seem to grow in the ground any more. Most everyone has started to barn tobacco. Crops are looking much better since it has rained a few times. We are very thankful the Lord has been so good to us. Some crops have dried completely up and won’t be any good at all. Well I went to the beach and let you all rest up for two weeks from reading and scribling. H. A., B. 8., Jimmy, and I had a wond erful time. We had a nice cottage on the water front and lenty of water too. On Wednesday a north easterner struck there, and the water was so rough it was rolling up on the steps part of the time. And when I went out at 4 a. m. to pick up shells, a wave knocked me down and wet my perfectly dry slacks. It surprised me so bad I just went back in and put on dry clothes and went back to bed to get warm. Those waves will get you if you don’t watch out. I Little River Ice Co.
