WAKEFIELD NEWS
Well, I hope the rush will soon
be over, and maybe we can be still
and know we have a God reigning
over us and giving courage and
strength to press forward to the
high calling. If we would only
realize that we can stand in his
struggle and his alone, I feel sure
we would call on him more often,
and go to the house of worship
more frequently to serve him. I
think our adults are afraid of
polio, too. We had only 35 at
Sunday School last Sunday. I
don’t know what would become
of the church and Sunday School
if it weren’t for the children. I
do hope and pray it won’t be much
flowers.
Personals
longer before they can go again.
I am sorry to say little Jimmy
Hodge has had a bad case of poi
son oak and had to be rushed to
Raleigh Monday for treatment of
blood poisoning. He is out of dan
ger now. Dr. Root said his aunt
Mrs. Bessie Hodge Minnus, has
been nursing him at her home on
708 East Franklin St. We are
hoping he can come home in a
day or two.
Mrs. Wilma Carroll of Raleigh
spent the night with Mrs. Vera
Rhodes Wednesday night.
Mrs. E. W. Hood spent the night
with me Monday and Tuesday.
Mrs. Vera Rhodes and Mrs. Gar
land Faulkner went to the cannery
at Wendell Tuesday and canned
grape juice and corn.
Mr. Bowling said the cannery
would be open only on Tuesday
and Thursday p.m., 1 to 4. It’s a
wonderful thing to have. I wish
we had one at Wakelon.
Mrs. J. A. Williams of Boone is
visiting Mrs. Lida Bridges this
week.
Mrs. Annie Pearce visited Miss
Claudie West of Louisburg last
week.
Mrs. D. S. Joyner and Mrs.
Frank Kannon and baby visited
the H. A. Hodges last Sunday.
Mr. Morris Hicks had an old
fashioned tobacco tying last Wed
nesday night and served the crowd
chicken barbecue. After all, that
is a good way to get it tied.
But we did ours the hard way.
Uncle Bill Broughton and Jimmy
Hodge and I did 1250 sticks and
had it ready to sell and didn’t
even have any barbecue, but we
ha something about as good (green
peas) and corn pone, water melon
and lemonade.
Mrs. T. Y. Furyear has returned
from New Jersey after spending
some time with Mrs. H. E. Whita
ker and family. I know she had
a swell time. All we Southerners
enjoy going North once in a while.
Lester Adcock, is it hot up there
in Connecticut? We have a 103
here in the shade, and I went
barefooted to kepe from ruining
my Shenanigans. The last time
I was up there I ruined a white
pair with the melted tar and as
phalt and had to throw them away.
We may see you later in the au
tumn, You all come on down
any time. We will be glad to
have you all. We can sleep on the
lawn if it’s too hot in the house.
Birthdays seem to be a regular
thing during August but I rather
be an August Bird than a July Fly.
Shirley Faulkner had one last
Tuesday, the 31st. Uncle Bill
Broughton had one Monday, the
30th. With a birthday supper at
Mrs. Vera Rhodes and the H. A.
Modges, Mrs. E. W. Hood was
there also. I am not through yet.
I am going to celebrate mine again
tonight at a barbecue supper given
by the Zebulon Record at the
Legion Hut. I celebrate mine all
through the month every time I
get a chance.
Little Wayne Price is much im
proved. I am glad to know the
Lord has answered our Prayers
in his behalf. The Doctor says he
may start to school again. I am
really proud of the many cards
and letters and little gifts of mon
ey and toys that were sent to him.
It did a lot of good. I thank you,
one and all. for doing it for him.
Our sympathy goes out to Pat
Pearce and family in their be
rievement.
There will be Sunday School at
the regular time, 10:00 a.m., next
Sunday. Be on hand. We need
you all.
We sympathize with the
Preston Smith in the loss of their
favorite pet Spitz last Wednesday
in a hospital in Raleigh. He had
dog polio. We all love our pets,
so let it be a Spitz or Hound, you
better quit kicking my dog around.
Bye now.
—Mrs. Vera Rhodes.

In Insuring Crops
Little Rive A led all other town
ships in Wake County in per
centage of crop insurance con
tracts for tobacco, announced John
Houghton Ihrie, Jr., who serves as
loss adjuster for the insurance
program.
An interesting sidelight, he said,
is that a father and his son were
the first in the township to pay
in full. They are John Pulley and
his son, Joe.
