We are glad to report not many on the sick list this week. Mr. Joe Carter of Raleigh who was thrown from a motorcycle last Wednesday afternoon was not seriously hurt but had painfully skinned places and bruises and a broken toe. He has to stay in bed and is at his father’s, Mr. J. B. Carter, for a few days. We hope he can soon go back to work. We are having a goodly number at our revival at Hephzibah each night. Services begin at eight o’clock and are conducted by the pastor, Rev. Joe Roach. Mr. and Mrs. John Moody of Rolesville spent last week with their grand-daughter, Mrs. A. O. Puryear. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Gay and chil dren were visitors of Corporal Luther Gay at Fort Bragg on Sun day, and attended the air show there. Corporal Gay is J. T.’s brother. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Whitaker of Trenton, N. Mrs. Sallie Horton returned home to Mrs. Ed Fowler’s after spending some time with her son, Mr. B. K. Horton. We are glad to say Mrs. Joe Roach’s mother, Mrs. Sallie Sink of Lexington, was able to be at church Sunday. She has been ill while visiting her daughter. We were glad to have Mrs. Z. V. Warner of Lexington, who was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roach, at church Sunday. It seemed quite a new day Sunday with the chil dren back in Sunday School. We had 164 in number last Sunday. We are so thankful the ban has been lifted for polio. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Whitaker of Trenton, N. J., are visiting rela tives here. Mr. Charles Thorne of Varina spent Sunday night with his grand parents, the T. Y. Puryears. Mrs. T. Y. Puryear. For Bicycle Repair See BILL STRICKLAND At Home on Horton St. This, That & the Other (Continued from Page 1) recipe requested last week calls for one pint of grapes in a two quart jar with one cupful of sugar poured over them and the jar fill ed with boiling water and sealed. She inverts them for cooling. Os course it would be one cupful of grapes and a half-cup of sugar for a quart jar. Mrs. Mary Outlaw told me she has directions that say fill the jars approximately half full of grapes, with one cup of sugar added for quarts, or one and one-half cups for half-gallons. Pour in boiling water and seal, as above. Ready for use after six weeks. Both reci pes are for scuppernong grapes. You will find when the jars are opened the grapes have very little taste, all flavor having gone into the liquid. Thanks to both these friends for helping me out. Last winter my nephew, Bob Davis of Palisades told me he had for years wanted to see what farming would be here with the rain we have supplemented by irrigation as needed. It sounded wonderful and I keep wishing it might be tired this fall on our lit tle patches of garden stuff. For even the approach of the eguinoc tial season has so far failed to bring us rain, and vegetables are too parched to revive unless mois ture comes soon. At times like this farmers who can water crops as needed have all the advantage over us. When I reached the receiving line for the reception following the parent-teacher meeting Mon day night, Mrs. Fred Page, who stood at the head, said “You are LUCAS MILLING CO. It sounded a bit premature, but I was already in a sort of sur prised daze and liable to hear queer things. Mrs. Page is my lit tle grandson’s teacher. I had an interrupted conversa tion Monday afternoon with “Chief” Willie B. Hopkins, who is also president of the PTA. He wanted me to act as publicity chairman for the organization this year and we were to talk it over after going to the schoolhouse. But somehow, though I was quite early, T never could catch his eye, and he seemed too busy to be bothered. Still it was a shock to hear myself read out as a member of the staff, and I tried later to ex plain why it would be impossible for me to serve. Instead, after a few words from Mr. Hopkins it was amazing to hear myself saying I’d do the best I could at the job. It is really over powering to have about six and one-half feet of law and order towering above you, insisting that you do whatever is possible to help your school and community. Small wonder I capitulated.
