Friday, October 8, 1948 Story of Zebulon's Oldest Social Club Is Told Mrs. A. R. House Tells of "Sewing Circle" Organization By Mrs. A. R. House The Wednesday Afternoon Club, as it is called today, is the first club organized in Zebulon, having been formed March 3, 1914, with thir teen members. At that time it was called the Ladies Sewing Club. Original members included the organizer, Mrs. O. M. Marshburn, and Mesdames G. S. Barbee, W. C. Campen, J. F. Coltrane, E. C. Dan iel, T. J. Horton, E. A. Metcalf, J. A. Strickland, W. C. Wakefield, Beatrice Earl Weathersby, W. S. Wilson, and W. O. Clayton. Others who were asked to join the club refused, thinking it a sin to join anything outside of the church and the Woman’s Better ment Association (PTA). Mrs. Sam Gabriel, A. C. Strick land, and a new bride, Mrs. S. G. Flowers, were added to make the membership total sixteen. When Mrs. Metcalf moved away, Mrs. R. L. Daniel took her place. It was decided to keep the club with sixteen members, and as a member resigned another was add ed. Mrs. A. L. G. Stephenson, the wife of the founder of the first newspaper in Zebulon, became a member in 1916. Another bride, Mrs. F. E. Bunn, joined in September, 1916. At this time the club decided to keep it with young married ladies, and Mrs. A. R. House was added in May, 1917. Mrs. J. C. Lockhart, wife of the school superintendent, joined the same year. Mrs. J. M. Harper, whose hus band came to take Dr. J. A. Strick land’s place, Mrs. R. M. Sanford, wife of a tobacconist, Mrs. J. *K. Barrow, C. E. Flowers, and E. H. Moser came in 1919 and 1920. Bettie May McDowell and Mrs. Baylus Whitley, both newlyweds, joined in 1921. Mrs. M. B. Chamblee moved to Zebulon from Wakefield and joined the club in September, 1922. In 1923, Mrs. Ed Beasley, W. B. Williams, E. M. Hall, and Fred Page joined the group. Mrs. John Horton entered in January, 1925. and Margaret Finch and Lucille Stell Shamburger in 1927. Mrs. C. V. Whitley joined in 1929, and Mrs. J. G. Kemp, A. V. Medlin, and R. E. Pippin in 1934. Mrs. Pippin moved away in 1938 and Mrs. Page left for a while when she moved to Sanford, but she returned in 1939. Daniel is now president. Dues collected have been used for flowers for the sick and for passing of loved ones. Babies born to club members received showers, flowers and pictures. Occasional picnics for the husbands are held. For the past few years bridge has been played, but no prizes have been awarded. It was found card tables are easier to serve on than lap luncheons. The members have found this organization binds them closer to gether across the years. They have found happiness and strength in each other. School Board Meets The Wakelon School Board met Monday night in Principal Fred Smith’s office to dispose of routine business, and discuss plans for lighting the Wakelon ball park. The committee voted unanimously to undertake a campaign to raise the necessary funds immediately. Present at the session were the principal, Chairman W. G. Temple, H. C. Wade, Pettigrew Gay, and Ferd Davis. The Zebulon Record Bonita Writes News of Pilot This Week Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wood of Louisburg were home with her mother, Mrs. Lillie Stallings, on Sunday. Miss Ladane Medlin of Wilming ton was home with her mother, Mrs. Ludie Medlin, for the week end. Misses Lazelle Lewis and Lois Nanney were honored with a par ty on Saturday night with all of their friends present. Cookies, pea. nuts, and punch were served. Dancing, singing and games were enjoyed by all. It was really a treat for the young people. Mrs. Waylon Ray spent the week j end in Henderson with her friends i and relatives. Mrs. Milton Griffin of Jamesville was home for a few days last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Phillips.
