Story of Zebulon's Oldest Social Club Is Told
Mrs. A. R. House
Tells of "Sewing
Circle" Organization
By Mrs. A. R. House
The Wednesday Afternoon Club,
as it is called today, is the first club
organized in Zebulon, having been
formed March 3, 1914, with thir
teen members. At that time it was
called the Ladies Sewing Club.
Original members included the
organizer, Mrs. O. M. Marshburn,
and Mesdames G. S. Barbee, W. C.
Campen, J. F. Coltrane, E. C. Dan
iel, T. J. Horton, E. A. Metcalf,
J. A. Strickland, W. C. Wakefield,
Beatrice Earl Weathersby, W. S.
Wilson, and W. O. Clayton.
Others who were asked to join
the club refused, thinking it a sin
to join anything outside of the
church and the Woman’s Better
ment Association (PTA).
Mrs. Sam Gabriel, A. C. Strick
land, and a new bride, Mrs. S. G.
Flowers, were added to make the
membership total sixteen. When
Mrs. Metcalf moved away, Mrs.
R. L. Daniel took her place.
It was decided to keep the club
with sixteen members, and as a
member resigned another was add
ed.
Mrs. A. L. G. Stephenson, the
wife of the founder of the first
newspaper in Zebulon, became a
member in 1916.
Another bride, Mrs. F. E. Bunn,
joined in September, 1916. At this
time the club decided to keep it
with young married ladies, and
Mrs. A. R. House was added in
May, 1917. Mrs. J. C. Lockhart,
wife of the school superintendent,
joined the same year.
Mrs. J. M. Harper, whose hus
band came to take Dr. J. A. Strick
land’s place, Mrs. R. M. Sanford,
wife of a tobacconist, Mrs. J. *K.
Barrow, C. E. Flowers, and E. H.
Moser came in 1919 and 1920.
Bettie May McDowell and Mrs.
Baylus Whitley, both newlyweds,
joined in 1921.
Mrs. M. B. Chamblee moved to
Zebulon from Wakefield and joined
the club in September, 1922.
In 1923, Mrs. Ed Beasley, W. B.
Williams, E. M. Hall, and Fred
Page joined the group.
Mrs. John Horton entered in
January, 1925. and Margaret Finch
and Lucille Stell Shamburger in
1927.
Mrs. C. V. Whitley joined in
1929, and Mrs. J. G. Kemp, A. V.
Medlin, and R. E. Pippin in 1934.
Mrs. Pippin moved away in 1938
and Mrs. Page left for a while
when she moved to Sanford, but
she returned in 1939. Since then

the club has made no changes in
membership.
Mrs. A. R. House has been sec
retary-treasurer for ten years.
Mrs. E. C. Daniel is now president.
Dues collected have been used
for flowers for the sick and for
passing of loved ones. Babies born
to club members received showers,
flowers and pictures. Occasional
picnics for the husbands are held.
For the past few years bridge
has been played, but no prizes
have been awarded. It was found
card tables are easier to serve on
than lap luncheons.
The members have found this
organization binds them closer to
gether across the years. They have
found happiness and strength in
each other.
