Page Four This, That & the Other (Continued from Page 1) Clayton women. And it was done beautifully. We were all impressed by the way lunch was served. You filed in double lines by long tables on which were stacked six hunderd boxes of lunch, all identical, ex cept, perhaps, for cake filling. You picked up a box and a little farther on selected an apple, some grapes, or both. Last were tables where hot coffee was served. You sat down to eat in the auditorium and afterwards carried your emp tied box and paper cup outside. This serving took a minimum of time at the lunch period; but it tires one to think of the hours of labor preceding enjoyment of the meal. For years whenever the Clay ton W. M. S. was mentioned I had a clear mental picture of Mrs. B. A. Hocutt and the late Mrs. D. J. Thurston, surrounded by numer ous unknown, and therefore fea tureless women; but I am filled with admiration and appreciation for what has been done by those I do not know. The president of our woman’s club, Mrs. Fred Page, has suggest ed that I do a little publicity work for the clean-up campaign soon to be put on here. The truth is that before I say one word to anyone else about any condition that may require remedying I shall be com pelled to tackle my own back yard, and also the front. If you fail to be urged by me to be active in the clean-up work, it will be be cause I simply haven't the nerve to insist that you do what I have not yet succeeded in accomplish ing. When a few year ago the sons sent their father and me to see Wake Forest and Carolina teams in a football game at Chapel Hill I remarked that I had never be fore seen a real game and supposed I would never see another. But last Saturday our friends, the C. M. Wades of Charlottesville, Va., took us to see another game by the same teams, or their succes sors, playing at Wake Forest. We sat on the first row of seats in the east section and had a clear view of the field, if that’s what you call it. Also of the bands, the cheerleaders, the drum majorettes, —and when this is said, don’t think I mean their costumes, —and all the other equipment, impedi menta. paraphernalia and pro ceedings. I knew a little bit more than at my first game, and my friend explained as the game progressed; so now I have an idea of what a down is and why, all of a sudden, the players stop trying to go one way and start trying to keep their opponents from going the other. And when one fails to rise I get sickish and begin wondering if that boy’s mother is there. It is a strange sound that com bines thousands of yells into a roar, and stranger still to realize that your own voice is furnishing its quota. Interesting to watch expressions on faces near enough to be clearly seen, and exasperat ing to find this watching has cost you the sight of something special on the players’ part. There’s a fascination in it all. But I must for various reasons attend few games. One is that I am too old for such strenuous ex ertion as football, and Saturday’s contest exhausted me. For with all my heart, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, I played with the Wake Forest team that day.
