Page Four This, That, and the Other (Continued from Page 1) camera shot made at the identical instant that at least one liver takes aim and explodes. Years ago I knew a girl who had a lovely voice and used it freely and generously, singing in church, going to visit sick people and cheering them with songs, and taking part in the group singing that was then very popular. But after a few years she decided that because she did not have the kind of voice that could make her fa mous there was no use taking time for music. She refused to sing at all. 1 was dimly reminded of that girl by my husband’s recent be havior. He is fitting up a work shop with real machinery for woodworking and looks forward to having a tremendously good time making the things that can be managed by an elderly man, slightly crippled. Ever since we were married he has made shelves, changed doors, built play pens for the babies, built what he wanted and could afford; and I’ve grown to depend on him for everything of that kind. But since he has been fitting up his shop he is unwilling to do any thing in the carpentering line, be cause he fears he can’t do it ex actly right without the proper ma chmm-y. He even refused to saw me two blocks from the trunk of an apple tree he had a colored man dig up, saying he was afraid he’d not get them abso lutely flat at the ends. I’m go ing to sneak out and take his old handsaw and fix those things my self. They are wanted for the Personals Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Kemp Building bases of some evergreen decora tions I have in mind; and I don’t need perfection; a reasona ble facsimile will be plenty good. December magazines have hun dreds of suggestions for Christ mas decoration; some good; some not so good; some just plain silly For instance: You are advised to bring good cheer into your bed room by tying bunches of every green to the bedposts. Not my bedroom, please; and most posi tively, not my bedposts. If I went blundering in there in the dark and ran into a bunch of hol ly or cedar. I’d have to keep tell ing myself that whoever put it there meant well and didn’t really want to hurt me. And it would be hard to hold on to good cheer. I am dubious about too much green stuff in the house, certainly the berried kinds. Unless these branches are kept in water, they soon begin dropping berries, and there you are or there some one else is, ready to step on every one that falls. In water they keep exceedingly well; and small twigs stuck in an Irish potato last as long as you want to keep them, if you’ll soak the potato in water once in a while. Some decorator in a leading magazine says blue and white or silver are the true Christmas col ors instead of the red and green we more often see. That may be true; but my un asked advice is that you do not go in too strongly for the blue and silver unless your house is well heated. Merely thinking of that combination in cold weather starts me shivering.
