Page Eight Conservation Program Described by Agents (Continued from Page 1) Mr. E. D. Finch of Zebulon has provided away to carry terrace and surplus road water out of his field. Before 1947 the road wa ter was being carried by a terrace. This system did not prove satis factory. Mr. Finch seeded a nat ural draw to orchard grass and ladino clover. The following year water was turned on this area. The terraces and rows were changed to empty in this meadow. In addition to having an outlet for water, hay is being cut from this seeded waterway. Mr. Joe Tippett of Zebulon has used a bulldozer to clear and slope the banks of a small stream which passes through his farm. Land on each side of this stream was flood ed due to the water being held by briars and bnshes. These banks will be seeded to a mixture of grasses and clovers. By mowing once or twice a year, these banks will be kept in a desirable condi tion. The District Supervisor of the Neuse River Soil Conservation District, states that an election will be held the week of Decem ber 6-11, 1948, to elect one mem ber of the Wake County Soil Con servation Committee. Joe Tippett of Zebulon and M. G. Brooks of Fuquay Springs are the nominees, one of which will be elected to a term of three years. Balloting has been arranged at the following places: County Agent’s office in the Old Rex Hos pital Building, and the Vocation al Agricultural Departments of the following High Schools: Millbrook, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Zebulon, Wendell, Garner, Fuquay, Apex, Cary, Green Hope, and Knight dale. Mr. Olive states that the person elected will serve with him and L. O. Page, Farm Manager of the State Hospital Farm, in carrying on the work of the Wake County Soil Conservation Committee of the Neuse River Soil Conserve-; tion District. It will be the responsibility of this committee, as required in the North Carolina Districts Law, to set up conservation goals for the county. They may request assistance from any agency or in dividual in carrying out these goals. This committee will nomi nate and conduct all elections in securing new committeemen. Dr. L. M. Chamblee The Inaurance Man Zebulon Store Windows Brighten Up with New Christmas Decorations Christmas decorations began to brighten up Zebulon stores this week as merchants started to work on attractive Christmas dis plays calculated to catch the eye of customers and bring them in to buy. Among the first to prepare windows are Carolina Power & Light Company, Zebulon Drug Company, McPhail-Farmer Co., and Wakelon Drug Company. Haywood Jones, at the Zebulon Drug Company, has an original painting of C. V. Whitley’s house during last winter’s heavy snow decorating the mirror behind the soda fountain. The painting, done from a kodachrome Hayward took, is unique among the Christmas displays. In addition to the painting, Hay ward has arranged his Christmas candies in a new Pangburn candy refrigerator box which, he says, keeps the candies absolutely fresh at all times. The office girls at Carolina Power & Light fixed up both of the front windows, one with a Christ mas tree and the other with a fire place complete with stocking hung on the mantel. At McPhail-Farmer, the win dows display suitable merchandise for presents for every member of the family. Large candles and crepe brighten up the windows.
