Page Six Carl Bjork's Tips Each week I find time to read abundant literature or printed matter. This extra perusal is apart from the usual reading demanded of those who teach academic stud ies to boys and girls. We subscribe to one daily, three magazines. Often we buy several weeklies, and several monthly magazines when in town on a shopping trip. All of these are read almost letter by letter; in fact read everything in every paper or magazine that I receive or buy. There have been times when I have owned large libraries. In cluded in the collection have been books on every sort. At present I have only a few hundreds books on hand. Somehow I have always been rad'cal in thought concerning the retention of books. To me unused books are like unused stocks of food. To allow a book to sit upnn a shelf for years is a sin. Thus I have scattered books all over, giv ing them mostly to people who promised to give them to others. Some of my books are re-read. Several of them have an added at traction for me everytime. I do not know how many times I have read B. H. Carroll’s “An Interpre tation of The English Bible.” There are 24 of his books in my present library; I read them over Last week I pulled out a small and over. book by Russell H. Conwell. It is entitled “Effective Prayer.” This book was given me by The President of Eastern Baptist Sem inary in Philadelphia, Gordon Palmer. I recall him coming to the hospital where I was a patient and handing me the book. It was a few days before Christmas in 1939. No less than twelve other peo ple have read this book. They have written their names in the front of the book, at my ’•equest. in some hospital. All of them were made well, returned home, and as far as I know are somewhere in this world now. Those twelve compose the fol lowing: a teacher in a state col lege, a farmer’s wife, a telephone operator, another farmer’s wife, a nurse, a widow, a minister in Illi nois, a clerk in a city store, a trucker’s wife, a public official, d iMmrn KnrT T\ wnr Xms -F -F ~F "4- -f- -h «+- " -F 4- -4» Among our assets wc like to count the only one that money cannot buy, your good will. All of them concluded their reading of Conwell’s simple little book with this notation, “God Answers Prayer.” And I am also of that group; not just because God said He would answer prayer, but because the evidences of prayer answ red are both personal and public. Faith would cause me to trust His promise but experience presents fruition and makes faith rejoice in its expectations or aspirations. Christmas, as it presents a Sa viour, is The Greatest Answer to prayer. Many men shook the hour glass of time to hurry His appear ance but millions lifted their voic es for deliverance. Many were looking “for re demption in Jerusalem,” and God sent Him “in the fulness of time.” The Redeemer came be cause men were asking God for someone to redeem them. Would that we still had faith, all of us, te believe the God can answer prayer to meet the per plexities of the hour, and make men right by the application of His Grace throughout the world! “Tips” wishes you what God knows is best for you in this fest ive season, and throughout the coming year.
