Page Four Governor Commends NCCJ for Work, Brotherhood Week, February 18-25 CHARLOTTE, N. C, Governor W. Kerr Scott has ac cepted the honorary chairmanship of North Carolina’s Brother hood Week observance February 20-27 with a call for harmony among Catholics, Protestants and Jews. “1 commend the National Conference of Christians and Jews for its success in reminding our people throughout the year of the dignity of individuals and for the insights and skills which it is helping to create in the great job of building better human relations.” he declared. The Governor’s statement was made public here tonight by Al lyn P. Robinson, regional direc tor of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, which is sponsoring the observance. The complete text of the state ment, contained in a letter from Governor Scott to Mr. Robinson, follows: Year Around Task “For many years North Caro lina has had the enviable reputa tion of being one of the most pro gressive of the United States. It is heart-warming to know, how ever, that this progress has not been confined to roads and build ings concrete and steel but that it has been at the same time forging ahead with the all-im portant task of creating good un derstanding among its citizens both as North Carolinians and as citi zens of the world. “It is, therefore, with a sense of appropriateness that I accept, as Governor of the state, the honor ary chairmanship for North Car olina of Brotherhood Week in 1949. I hope that our institutions throughout the state and all of the media that can give voice to our common aims will so participate in this program that the spirit of Brotherhood symbolized by our observance in 1949 may be made real in our actions in the days and months ahead. “Catholics, Protestants and Jews have helped to bestow upon our land an invalauble heritage. Together they must help us tap the spiritual resources which alone can make our country great and allow it to be counted a leader worthy to be followed in the coun cils of the world. It is only such leadership that can bring peace to our world.” William Yost Preyer of Greens boro, recently retired president of Vick Chemical company, is gen eral chairman of the North Caro lina observance- Other members of the state planning committee are Don Shoemaker, editor of the Asheville Citizen; Robert H. Frazier, Greensboro attorney; Dr. Franklin McNutt, of the Wo man’s College, UNC, graduate cen ter; Mrs. Karl Bishopric of Spray, director of the NCCJ program for women in North Carolina; and Rev. Robert Cox of Holy Trinity church. President Truman is honorary chairman of the national obser vance and Nelson A. Rockefeller is general chairman. The Zebulon Record Pilot News Mr. and Mrs. Pat Stevens and Mrs. Dell Pearce were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Denimal Privette on Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Averett of ■ Norfolk, Va., spent the weekend I with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. i Clyde Pearce. Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Alford of Raleigh were also with them. Mr. Victor Stallings was home 1 from Raleigh. We are very sorry that Mrs. Mamie Stallings is in Duke Hos- 1 pital. We hope it won’t be±oo long before she will be out an feeling! well again. Mr. and Mrs. Burt Gay spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Hu bert Bunn. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Brantley visited Mr. and Mrs. Mark Wheeles in Momeyer. The W. M. U. held its monthly meeting oh Saturday night in th° home of Mrs. Ford Stallings. The ; ladies gave Mrs. Stallings’s moth er a sunshine basket. I’m sure she will enjoy her’s as much as Mrs Hubert Bunn has. Mrs. Hubert Bunn wishes to say thank you to every one who had any thing to do with her basket. I’m sure she will enjoy each gift and find them all very useful when at last she will be up to enjoy them. Mrs. Ora Alford of Raleigh, vis ited here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Maylon Frazier and Mr. and Mrs. Burt Ray were home with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Ray. Mrs. Gordon Mercer of Newport News, Va., is spending a few days I here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Davis Stallings. Dudley Stallings, Johnny Alford were home. Mr. and Mrs. Valdese Phillips of Newport News, Va., came to visit their parents, Mr. and Mrs. ! W. I. Phillips. After a few days ! with them, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Darnell Spann and Mrs. W. I.
