Conservation Notes (Continued from Page 1) Very little washing was noticeable in small grain, alfalfa, and pas tures. Special consideration should be given to the crops grown on our steeper slopes. L. O. Page, District Supervisor, urges the use of a system of strip cropping on all slopes and espec ially the steeper slopes. The sys tem calls for a strip of close grow ing crop alternated with the strip of row crops. Mr. Page says, “You can then go to sleep at night and not worry too much about your field being washed ‘to pieces’. If the terrace below the cultivation strip should break, then the close growing crop will so spread the water that the next terrace will hold.” Zollie Woodlief of Wake Forest has recently had terraces staked on ten acres. Before these terraces could be properly applied to the FOUND—Trailer license. Number CA 58006. Owner may recover same at Record office. The Zebulon Record land, the establishment of water disposal areas was necessary. This Mr. Woodlief did by the seeding of spring oats and lespedeza. This fall, by lightly scarifying the stubble, a permanent hay mix ture will be seeded on these areas. With the addition of these meadow strips and terraces to be used for a guide, it will now be possible to lay out a row system where each row carries the water continuously to the outlet. Each row will have proper drainage yet erosion will be held to a minimum. While discussing conservation measures, Mr. Woodlief said, “I just got to do something for my fields are washing away.” The reality of his statement could be seen from the erosion which oc curred last year. In his complete soil and water conservation plan which was worked out with the assistance of personnel from the Neuse River Soil Conservation District, Zollie plans to seed eight acres to permanent pasture this fall. He has also seeded one acre of sericea along the steep road banks this spring.
