SIX ALL-TOURNAMENT PLAYERS AT WICHITA NCAA FINALS COME FROM WAKE FOREST TEAM Harry Nicholas Charlie Teague Gene Hooks Joe Fulghum Russ Batchelor Dick Vander Clute Pitcher Second Base Third Base Left fielder Catcher Pitcher Wakefield Board Os Deacons Votes To Build Church The Board of Deacons of the Wakefield Baptist Church held a call meeting at the parsonage on June 25 to consider the erection of a new church sanctuary. The con dition of the present buliding was discussed and it was felt that it is imperative to begin a building pro gram as soon as possible. Architectural plans already on hand were examined and much in teresting discussion developed. Several members of the board and the pastor are hoping to visit various new church buildings in the near futuer with the first trip planned for next week. Present at the meeting were the Rev. Kermit Combs, pastor, D. D. Chamblee, chairman of the board of deacons, P. P. Pace, Douglas Pace, Clifton Pippin, Bert Gay, Harold Green, Claud Baker, W. J. Frazier, and William Honeycutt. Banner Warehouse Expects Good Season Banner Warehouses, No. 1 & 2, Wendell, have announced person nel for the 1949 selling season. Headed by J. W. Dale, Jr., and Fred Harris as sales managers, the new business expects to have a successful season. The Banner Warehouses were formerly known as Bernard’s No. 1 & 2. I. D Medlin will be floor man ager. J. W. Dail, Jr., a native of Fu quay Springs and a resident of Nashville. Ga., for the past five years, has been in the tobacco bus iness for 18 years since he was 15 years old. A Methodist and a Mason, he is the father ot two children, a boy and a girl. He lives with his family in the Whitlock Apartments in Wendell. Fred Harris is from the Mount Pleasant community, and I. D. Bailey from the same section. First Cotton Bloom Reported Wednesday A. H. Maiden of Zebulon, Route I, was awarded a year’s subscrip tion to the Record for bringing in the first cotton bloom of the sea son this week. On Wednesday, James McSwain of Route 3, and Donnie Boykin and J. R. Perry of Route 2 brought in blooms. Lonnie and Spencer Tant of Route 4 brought in blooms Thursday. Heavy Rains Disrupt Telephone Service; Bridge Is Washed Out on Poole Road Heavy rains in this vicinity Wednesday afternoon did severe damage to highways, vehicles, and utilities, but only small damage was reported to crops. Zebulon was wholly without telephone service for a short per iod following the severe electrical storm, but Southern Bell workers quickly put the local system in order. Carolina Power & Light Company workers labored Wed nesday night and far into Thurs day repairing damage done by lightning in this area. Approximately three inches of rain fell between Zebulon and Wake Farmers Plan Curing Trip Wake County tobacco farmers are invited to attend the Field Day at the Oxford Experiment Station on Wednesday, July 6. A tour to the Station will be conducted by the County Farm Agent leaving the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at 12:30 o’clock. Wake County has been designated the afternoon of July 6 for farmers to visit the farm and study the work which is being carried on in tobacco production. Rex Tippett’s hard-hitting Rocky Nine continued to score freely in winning over Pat Farm er’s Wildcats Monday in a game played on slippery ground after rain had fallen early in the after noon. Final score was 12-3. In the only other game played Chimes Installed in Methodist Church For the first time this week the community heard the sound of the Mass chimes being installed in the new building of the Methodist Church, now nearing completion. The Martha Flowers Pippin Mem orial Chimes are placed in the church by Mrs. S. G. Flowers, in memory of her daughter, Martha Flowers Pippin. Mrs. Flowers, long Zebulon, N. C., Friday, July 1, 1949 Raleigh, washing out one bridge on the Poole Road between Ral eigh and Wendell and forcing com muters to return to Zebulon via Knightdale. Dozens of stalled auto mobiles were along both the Poole Road and Highway 64. A Zebulon Supply Company de livery truck stalled out in an un derpass in Smithfield and was subsequently covered with water, resulting in damages of $l,lOO to merchandise and an estimated S4OO damage to the vehicle. Bobby Williams and Andrew Harris, Negro, were on the truck at the time it stalled, but left be ably one of the most interesting things to farmers is the work being carried on on tobacco curing. The chimes have a range of two and one half octaves and may be fore water covered it. The members of the Methodist Church already are grateful for this valuable addition to its new building, and plans are being made for the chimes to be heard regular ly by all the community. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Wake Family Is Named Ideal Farm Family of State Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Shearon and family were recently honored at the Agriculture Conference held at State College as the perfect ex ample o tfhe Better Family Living Program. The Shearons have advanced from the day when farming meant work from sun-up til sun-down to the era of modern diversified and mechanized farming which leaves time for a little fun and money for a few luxuries. Extension Service has been look ing for the answer for readjust ment of a long range farm program for North Carolina farmers. The Shearon’s seem to have solved the problem. They bought their 150 acre farm on U. S. No. 1 about 10 miles north of Raleigh about five years ago. They did not rely on the 4% acre tobacco allotment as their only source of income. They added other crops and livestock which could be raised without interfering with (Continued on Page 8) Miss Mary Branch, 66 Dies at Wake Forest Miss Mary Branch. 66, of Wake Forest, Route 3, died Thursday night in Rex Hospital following a lengthy illness. She had been a resident of Wake Forest since 1900 and had been a member of Glen Royal Baptist Church since moving to Wake Forest. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Glen Royal Bap tist Church. The Rev. H. C. Ben nett officated. Burial followed in the Wake Forest Cemetery. Sur viving are one brother, Owen, of Wake Forest; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Harding of Wake Forest, Route 3, and Mrs. C. F. Fowler of Zebulon, Route 1; two nieces and seven nephews. Miss Branch was the first employee of the Royal Cotton Mills Co. and the late Mr. Carlton Mitchell Is Speaker at Rotary Carlton Mitchell, pastor of the Zebulon Baptist Church, snoke to the Zebulon Rotary Club Friday night. His talk was the last of a series sponsored by the Interna tional Relations Committee under the chairmanship of Luther Mas sey. The new Rotary year begins to night, and President-elect Willie B. Hopkins will be in charge of the meeting, succeeding Vester Brant ley.
