Vl/akelon School Opens With Large Enrollment Wakelon School opened its 1949- 50 term Tuesday morning with an enrollment of 718 students—s3l in the elementary school and 187 in high school. Opening exercises, attended by about 150 parents and other school patrons as well as the students, j included invocation by Rev. Paul Carruth, devotional by Rev. Carl ton Mitchell, welcome to teachers by PTA President Howard Beck, and remarks by Herbert Appenzel ler, new Wakelon coach. Raleigh YWA Holds Meeting j - ——■— I A Council meeting of Y. W. A.’s of Raleigh Association met at Hephzibah Community Center last Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Joe High is director of young people work and Mrs Oris Horton counselor of Y. W. A. work in Raleigh Association. About fifty members came from different churches. Rev. Joe Roach, and Rev. Rogers made short talks. Mrs. Joe High gave a very inspiring devo tional. Specila music was rendered by Miss Wallace of Fuquay Springs, Mrs. Mitchell of Zebulon and Mrs. Nellie Kemp of Zebulon, Methodist Services Are Listed The students who are going away to school will be the “honor guests'’ at the Service of Worship at 11:00 o’clock at The Methodist Church Sunday morning. Among this group will be Miss Laura James Sexton who has rendered excell ent service as church pianist Principal Fred Smith recognized the parents attending the exercises, and gave specific details of plans for the school year. Yesterday Mr. Smith announced that a band in structor had begun work at the school with a starting class of six teen boys and girls. The Wakelon football schedule, which will be the most ambitious in years, will be released next week. Teams already scheduled include Cary, Wendell, Norlina, Farmville, Spring Hope, and Ca thedral Latin of Raleigh. ; accompanied by Charles Horton of Zebulon. Miss Vivian Nowell brought the closing message, re minding us of never to forget Af rica. This meeting was carried out in form of a tea. At the close, all the counselors and officers formed a receiving line. The guests and members of Y. W. A. enjoyed the i fellowship of meeting these dis | tinquished people in His service. Refreshment consisted of mints, cakes, nuts and fruit punch served ; by committees in various Y. W. A.’s ; of the Association. The theme of the worship hour will be “The Nature of Peace.” Visitors, especially both new and returning teachers at the Wakelon School will receive a cordial wel come to the Worship Service and to the Church School which meets at 9:45. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, September 9, 1949 Three Deaths, One From Auto Crash, During Past Week One person was killed and three 1 were injured last Sunday in an auto collision at the intersection of N. C. Highways 42 and 39 near Zebulon, when David Calvin Quinn, 30, of Farmville, route 1, was killed. The accident involved the victim. Calvin Quinn, his wife and five | year old son as passengers, whose injuries are not believed to be serious by the investigating pa trolman; and Mrs. Kelly Hunter, prominent Zebulon business wom an, who is a patient in ReJc Hos pital in Raleigh with a leg injury. Mrs. I.unter was enroute to Goldsboro to be with her sister, Mrs. Wade, whose mother-in-law | had died, when the accident oc |curred. Mrs. Heulah Grimes Mrs. Beulah Johnson Grimes, 53, I wife of A. C. Grimes of Old Fort and Coats, died at her home in | Coats Wednesday morning at 9 a..m., following six months of ser ious illness. Funeral services was held from Gift Primitive Baptist Church of Coats, of which she was a member, Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. Officiating was Elder J. T. Lewis, pastor, assisted by the Rev. J. M. Long. The body was taken to the church one hour prior to the ser vice. Interment was in the Coats Cemetery. Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Mrs. R. D. Burgett of Washington, D. C., Mfs. Bill Creech of Raleigh, Mrs. Patsy Ricketts of Black Mountain; one grand daughter: her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Johnson of Old Fort. Three sisters, Mrs. T. H. Grimes of Siler City, Mrs. A. W. Howard of Gainesville, ! F la- Mrs. Betty J. Wrenn of Black j Mountain: three brothers, L. E. Johnson of Cary, J. N. Johnson of Zebulon and T. V. Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla. Lester B. Core Funeral services for Lester B. Core, of Selma, were conducted there in the Baptist Church, Fri day, September 2, by the pastor, Rev. H. B. Land. Two sisters sur vive, Mrs. L. J. Glover, of Zebulon, and Mrs. A. M. Williford, of Dur ham, besides the widower and children. Mrs. Eva Banner, of Tar boro, Mrs. Hubert Moore, Mrs. Graham Peedin, Mrs. Thomas Dun can, Miss Avetta Core, Selma, Wil liam O. Core, of Durham, Mason W. Core, of Goldsboro, and Lester C. Core of Chicago, 111. Cook Named Music Director by Baptists Prof. Claud Cook of Wake Forest College, has been selected to suc ceed Charles Horton as Minister of Music for the Zebulon Baptist Church. Prof. Cook teaches in the Music Department at Wake Forest. A native of Winston-Salem, Mr. Cook graduated from Guilford Col lege and has done work on his Masters Degree at Columbia Uni versity.. His work at Wake Forest has been highly commended. Charles Horton, who departed this week for study at the West minster Choir College, is one of 12 students this year in the entire United States honored by being chosen to study at the famed in stitution. Mr. Cook and Charles Horton were honored at a reception in the basement of the church on Wed nesday night. Members of the choir were present. RADIO STAR Pictured is Connie B. Gay, now a radio producer in Washington, D. C., and Arlington, Va., one-time resident of Lizard Lick. His new hillbilly show is breaking records in the capital city, according to his press agent. Chairmen Named By PTA Council The first meeting of the Wakelon Parent-Teacher Association will be held in the school auditorium Monday night, September 19, at 8 o’clock, the local PTA council de cided at a meeting in Principal Fred Smith’s office Wednesday night. Sheriff Addresses Rotary Club Sheriff Robert Pleasants, Wake County’s youngest chief law en forcement officer, addressed the Zebulon Rotary Club last Friday night, speaking on the high cost of crime. Wake County, its munici palities, and its other agencies, he declared, spend $1,015 a day on law enforcement but vastly more on crime itself. Sheriff Pleasants appeared as the guest of Deputy G. C. Massey, who had charge of the program. He was Local Woodmen to Hear State Officials All members Woodmen of the World are urged to attend regular meeting Wednesday night, Sept. 14th. Regular monthly supper will be held at Masonic Hall at 7:00 p.m. with regular business and initiation ceremonies beginning at Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Farm Bureau Plans First Fall Meeting For Monday Night The first regular fall meeting iof the Zebulon unit of the Farm Bureau will be held Monday night, September 12th, in the Wakelon High School Auditorium at 8 o'clock. President Garland Rich i ardson announced yesterday. State Secretary Flake Shaw will be the principal speaker at this meeting. Mr. Shaw is personally known to many local farmers and is known as being well informed con cerning the problems and needs of the farmer. “It is becoming increasingly im portant to maintain and strengthen our farm organization. This can be affectively done only by your reg ular attendance and whole-hearted support. Be sure to attend this meeting!” Mr. Richardson declared. “Sixty percent of all farm or ; ganizations belong to farm bureaus, U-o they must be doing a worth ! while job. Let us resolve, without 1 delay, to make ours bigger and bet j ter as we work faithfully toward a l progressive continuation of a worthy task well begun.” The annual membership drive will he discussed at Monday night’s meeting of the Farm Bureau.
