The Scribes got onto Bill Perry’s pitching, and Mitchell was rushed in to put out the fire. The revised edition was pre pared by Walter M. Kulash, asso ciate research entomologist of the Agricultural Experiment Station, and George D. Jones, in charge of extension entomology, who point out that the new organic insecti cides have given a well-timed boost to control of cotton insects. The authors estimate that in 1946 only 50 tons of insecticides were used on cotton in North Carolina, whereas the total in 1948 was more than 1,250 tons and perhaps twice that much in 1949. Principal insecticides used are benzene hexachloride (alone or in combination with DDT), toxa phene, and chlordane. All are poisonous but reasonably safe to use if proper precautions are taken. The effect of benzene hex achloride on different soils and crops is not yet fully known. For | this reason it is suggested that it not be used on land that will be ; .i v !
