THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXVI. Number 54. 4 Mrs. E. P. Denton Dies on Wednesday; Burial This Afternoon Mrs. E. P. Denton died in her sleep at her home here early Wed nesday morning. Though her health had not been good for several years, she had seemed as i well as usual on Tuesday, and had spent the weekend with her son, Allan, in Raleigh. The burial service will be held-| at the Methodist Church on Fri day afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, with Pastor S. E. Mercer being assisted by the Rev. R. H. Herring. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Route 2, Zebulon. Surviving are her father, J. H. Massey of Pilot; five sons: Ray mond S. Lynbrook, L. 1., N. Y.; Talmadge and Hilliard of Washing ton, D. C.; Allan of Raleigh; Wil lard of the home; five daughters: Mrs. Talbert O’Neal, Knightdale; Mrs. Clatie Abernathy, Nashville; Mrs. Charles Conover, Lake Pack- i anack, N. J.; Jackie and Dorothy I Denton, Raleigh; 14 grandchildren; four brothers: Philip and How ard Massey of Zebulon, Preston and Urquart of Pilot; four sisters: Mrs. G. H. Bissett, Henderson; Mrs. J. E. Tharrington, Raleigh; Mrs. Dolly Bissett and Mrs. Fred Hall, Pilot. Mrs. Denton’s life was charac terized by devotion to her family and friends. She was a faithful member of her church, attended services as long as health per mitted. Truly do “her children ar ise up and call her blessed.” Miss Salmon Directs Musical Program For Woman's Club Meeting Tuesday Mrs. L. M. Massey was program chairman for the March meeting of the Woman’s Club, held last Tuesday. She presented Miss Eliz abeth Salmon, minister of music at the Baptist Church an dteacher of piano at Wakelon School. Miss Salmon directed a program on Music, explaining its develop ment by periods of growth and change. She gave characteristics of the Baroque, the Classical and the Romantic periods, using piano solos played by her pupils in illus tration. Zelma Green played Bach’s Pre lude in C. James Yates Buried In Apex Wednesday The Howard Masseys were not ified on Tuesday of the death of Mrs. Massey’s brother-in-law, James Yates, of Apex, who had been in a critical condition for some months. He was buried on Wednesday, the day on which Mrs. Massey’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Pet Denton, died. Living next-door to the Denton home, Mrs. Massey was the first person called after the physician called by Willard Denton when he found his mo ther dead. Revival Begins Sunday At Hopkins Chapel The revival at Hopkins Chapel will begin Sunday night, March 25. Everybody is invited. C., Friday, March 23, 1951 Twin Strickland Brothers Join National Guard Unit At Monday Night Drill Carvin and Marvin Strickland, twin sons of Bergis Strickland of Middlesex, Route 2, passed their physical examinations and were sworn into the National Guard Monday night by , Capt. Barrie Davis, commanding officer of Bat tery A of the 113th Field Artiillery Battalion. The new privates put the local unit past the half-hundred mark in enlisted men. The battery now has 52 enlisted men and five of ficers. A spirited class in the use of the .50 caliber anti-aircraft .machine I gun was conducted Monday night I by Lt. George Hinds, who rigged a target range for the men to use in simulated attacks. A second drill for this week was held last night, and unusually good attendance was achieved by the men. No trill will be held on Monday night, March 26, since Easter Mon day is a holiday. The next drill will be conducted Thursday night, March 29, and will be four hours long. The entire battery will leave Saturday morning, April 7, for Ft. Bragg, where they will join the remainder of the 113th Battalion for service firing with the 105 mm howitzers. The unit will return to Zebulon Sunday afternoon. M. E. Easter Service Sunday at 11 a.m. The glorious Easter season will be celebrated at Zebulon Metho dist Church on Sunday at 11 a. m. Rev. S. E. Mercer will preach on “The Power of His Resurrec tion.” Members will be received both by baptism and letter at this service, and an Easter offering for the regular missionary and be nevolent work of the church will be received. This will be an unusually happy Easter at the local Methodist Church because the church is now free of debt. It will be dedicated on June 24 by Bishop Paul N. Gar ber of the Richmond and Geneva Areas of the Methodist Church. Bishop Garber will be assisted by Rev. E. B. Fisher, District Superin tendent, Rev. S. E. Mercer, and for mer pastors who can be present. Middlesex Seniors To Sponsor Barbecue The Senior Class of Middlesex High School will sponsor a barbe cue supper Saturday night, March 24, from 6 to 9 o’clock in the high school cafeteria. Large plates of barbecue with all the trimmings will be served for only SI.OO. As an added fea ture, a special plate for children will be served for only 50c, so come out and bring the whole family for a special Saturday night treat. The proceeds of the barbecue supper will go to help defray ex penses for the annual Senior Edu cational Trip to Washington, D. Flowers. - ... ■ REVIVAL SPEAKER Dr. J. Allen Easley, head of the Wake Forest College Department of Religion, will speak for the first service of the revival at the Baptist Church next week. Easley, Sunday; Dr. Carlyle Campbell, Monday; Dr. Fred West, Tuesday; Dr. A. C. Reid, Wednesday; Dr. E. McNeill Poteat, Thursday; Dr. George J. Griffin, Friday. All are invited to attend. Music will be provided by the choirs of the church each eve ning. The Easter theme will be pre sented in music and sermon at the Zebulon Baptist Church Sun day morning. Good Friday Service To Be Held Tonight The congregations of the Wake field Baptist Church, the Zebulon Methodist Church and the Zebulon Baptist Church will unite in a ser vice of worship this evening at 7:45. The Good Friday theme will be used. The Rev. S. E. Mercer, pastor of the Zebulon Methodist Church, will deliver a meditation on the Cross. The Rev. Kermit S. Combs will read from the Scrip tures and offer the evening prayer. The Rev. Carlton T. Mitchell will preside over the service. Last Saturday Night's Entertainment Enjoyed by Eighty-Seven Teen-agers On March 17, 87 young people responded to the invitation f-im ; the Zebulon Woman’s Clubs to use the Club building for recreation. The doors were opened just before : 7:30 and the group disbanded at 10:30. A big majority of the group was on hand when the three hours were over. Almost all of the girls and boys present were teen-agers from our immediate community. A committee from the Senior Club was on hand to preside over the register, over the refreshment table, and to serve as chaperones. This committee wishes to commend the conduct and attitude of the group. The Clubs are very pleas ed with this beginning and hope that the teen-agers were pleased. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Special Meeting to Name Permanent Chest Officers To Be Tonight at 8:45 A large attendance is expected tonight for the organizational meeting for the Zebulon Commun ity Chest, which will be held at 8:45 in the Masonic Hall. Every person who has contributed to the Community Chest is a member and entitled to attend the meeting. Chairman C. V. Whitley, head of the committee appointed by the Community Council to form the chest, said that permanent officers for the Community Chest will be elected tonight. , The idea for the Zebulon Com- munity Chest was born when lt t was found that this community . failed to receive benefits from the Wake County Community Chest in proportion {o the contributions made to this fund. Following the lead of Wake For est, and many other communities in the county, the Community Council formed a committee to so ! licit memberships in a local Chest L organization, and the solicitation ! began before Christmas. At the close of the canvass for memberships last week, nearly 100 people had contributed $841.40 to the Zebulon Community Chest. As announced by the Community Council committee before solici -1 tation began in December, the funds received by the Zebulon Community Chest will be divided this year among the Scouting ■ groups, the recreation program, : and local charity. This division of money can be changed for coming years by the i officers elected tonight, who will be responsible for the conduct of the Community Chest during the coming year. However, the money already collected, will be distribut ed according to the plan made by the committee. Chairman Whitley urged all members of the Community Chest to attend the meeting tonight since participation by every member will be necessary for the Com munity Chest to be a success. Sunrise Services to Be Held Sunday Morning The Intermediate Department of the Zebulon Baptist Sunday School will hold a sunrise service at the local cemetery on Easter Sunday. The public is invited to attend. Following the service the Interme diates will gather at the church for an Easter breakfast. Saturday there was a register and there will be a register every night which each person present will be asked to sign when he or she comes into the building. The boys and girls are asked to stay inside until the closing hour or un til they are ready to leave. Then they are asked to check out by putting the hour by their names. The clubs solicit the cooperation of the teen-agers in helping make this register a success. Activities going on during the first evening were: two tables of ping-pong; four tables of rook, ca nasta, and rummy; square dancing, and party dancing; and Just teen age enthusiasm and hilarity which (Continued on Page 4)
